Okay, I think this is pointless enough. And it’s been bothering me for a while.
Has anyone besides me noticed that the theme music to “The X-Files” is EXACTLY the same as the theme music for the 1960s sitcom “The Mothers-in-Law”, only slowed down and played more “spookily”? Should we have Toody and Muldoon … uhh Scully and Mulder look into this?
I think a better question might be this:
Has anyone on earth besides CalMeacham ever heard the theme music for the 1960s sitcom “The Mothers-in-Law” ?
You must never speak of this again.
I don’t recall the music (cause I was about five years old) but Kay Ballard was one of the mothers in law.
I can honestly say that I have never noticed that.
Of course, I was born in '79, so that might be a possible explaination as to why The Mother-In-Law doesn’t ring a theme-song bell. ::Swiddles ducks and runs to avoid the fruit being thrown at her::
Cal,
You must be referring to the hilarious sitcom aired 1967 - 1969 about how Roger and Kaye live next door to Eve and Herb and how Eve and Herb’s daughter Suzie marries Roger and Kaye’s son Jerry which forces the families to be a bit closer than they would prefer, particularly since Jerry and Suzie live in the garage.

PS - They had no information about the theme song. Sorry!

I am referring to that sitcom. It wasn’t “hilarious”, IMHO, but I was TV-addicted, so I watched it anyway. Now the damned song’s stuck in my head, and I keep thinking that “The X-Files” is just a special Halloween episode of “The Mothers-in-Law” that went on for too long.
I am not actually an X-Files fan, and I have never heard of “The Mothers In Law”, so this is unrelated to the OP, but when will I ever have another chance to toss in this bit of triva?
I once saw David Duchovney [sp? is it a u instead of o?] on some talk show, and a question was asked about the theme music. It was composed by a man named Mark Snow, and Duchovney explained that, when he once talked with him about it, Snow told him that the song secretly has lyrics that go:
“The X-Files is a show
With music from Mark Snow”
I cannot hear the theme music now without hearing Duchovney singing this little lyric to it.
The composition story I’ve always heard for the “X-Files” theme is that producer Chris Carter wanted something creepy and non-melodic. Composer Mark Snow provided a few attempts, but Carter kept saying, “Too much of a tune. Less melody.” Eventually Snow got frustrated, and just whipped out a series of arpeggios, minor suspensions, and echoing chords, and Carter said, “Perfect.”
Maybe in his moment of frustration, Snow inadvertently channeled a buried memory of an existing tune…?

It’s an O, but there’s no E in the name:
David Duchovny.
ROFL! Did he also write the theme to “Garry Shandling’s Show?”
I thought it was pretty hilarious too! I suppose that’s why it’s stuck in my head all this time. I always liked the music but can’t hear it now without smiling.
I don’t know, sadly, the Garry Shandling theme (no cable), so can’t comment. Can you describe?
This is what I can remember off the top of my head. I’m sure someone knows it in it’s entirety:
"This is the theme to Garry’s show,
The theme to Garry’s show
Garry called me up and asked
if I would write his theme song
We’re almost halfway finished,
how do you like it so far?
This it the theme to Garry Shandling’s show
This is the theme to Garry’s show,
the theme to Garry’s show
this is the music that you’re hearing
while they run the credits
We’re almost to the part,
part where I start to whistle
This is the theme to Garry Shandling’s show
(whistles tune)"
