X in Christ-mas?

Per column Why is Christmas abbreviated Xmas?, we learn that there is no need to “put the christ back in christmas”, as it is still there.

I would also like to point out that Jesus most definitely is not “the reason for the season”. He may be why you celebrate, but as this link indicates, celebrations at winter solstice have occurred for many reasons and predate christianity.

So there.

(I know I’m leaving something out. What was that in that other thread? Something like - “So where’s your Jesus now?” )

Hoo boy, Irishman, you’re celebrating the season by taking on both Jesus and Santa Claus? I expect to see another thread from you tomorrow where you’re debunking Hannukah.

It’s a Mailbag item, not one of Cecil’s Columns.

Well you don’t think we’re buying that whole “the oil that was only enough for one day miraculously burned for eight days” business, do you?

Since the article is a mailbag answer, not a Straight Dope column, this thread is leaving the «Comments on Cecil’s Columns» forum and going to visit my colleague C K Dexter Haven in the «Comments on Staff Reports or Mailbag Answers» forum.

Doh! Forum fumbles.

Colibri, I’m not taking on Hannukah (however it’s spelled, with or without the C) because I don’t know enough about it. Though as MEBuckner points out, that oil thing could use some looking in to.
