X2- the uncanny SPOILER thread!

Does anyone else notice they seem to have started a tradition of having someone “give the finger” in the movies? Both movies have a bird flipping scene. Wolvie leaving his middle claw extended after stopping the metal detector in X1, Mystique flipping the bird as she dives under the closing door in X2.

I’m wondering if this will continue.

In the comic, she was orginally worshiped as a goddess by a primitive tribe. However, I think that it’s been well established that the movies have been creating their own cannon, although based on the comic.

waaaay back on page 5, tracer said:

I think what you’ve asserted here is false. If I’m correct, the SRY (sex-determining region Y) gene is located on the Y chromosome, and there is NO analog on the X. (There are a few other genes like this, but VERY few, at least in mammals.) The X and Y chromosomes do pair and segregate as homologues in meiosis, but the pairing is only at a small, terminal segment of the X and a similar spot on the Y; the other portions of the chromosomes are not homologous, which means they do not carry the same types of genes in those portions.

You also said

…and I’m pretty sure this is also incorrect. Along that very short homologous segment, the Y chromosome carries the same genes as the X does (if it didn’t, there would be no pairing in meiosis), and thus a male can be either homo- or heterozygous for traits dependent upon genes within this region. I’m not sure how many sex-linked traits depend upon genes within this region, but my guess is that it’s relatively few, based on the small size of the homologous region, so you’re not too far off.

Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with X2, but dammit, this IS a board dedicated to fighting ignorance…

I hate to be the evil nitpicking geneticist again, but what is this, the “spout-off-bad-genetics” thread??? wink

On page 6, in trying to explain how a woman could be a mutant given the stipulation that the mutant gene is on the male-carried Y chromosome, Tir Tinuviel said

XXY is still Klinefelter’s (thus male), in most cases. If you’ve got a functional SRY gene on the Y chromosome and everything else goes right, you’re gonna be a male.
XXY women are EXTREMELY rare, because first of all you’d have to have had incomplete segregation in meiosis in one of your parents, AND you’d have to have a nonfunctional SRY gene or nonfunctional testosterone receptor or something else like that. So, if Klinefelter’s men are rare (think of how often you see a male calico cat), XXY women are freakin’ aliens. I’m not sure there is a name for XXY women, but if there is, it’s most certainly not mosaicism, which is something else entirely that I won’t go into here (look it up if you’re interested).

As for XXXXY, it’s possible, but those people would be seveeeerely retarded and probably would never even know of any mutant powers they had, much less be able to use or control them.

Your best bet for a mutant female would be an XY, where something went wrong in the sex-determining process (often a nonfunctional SRY gene). However, this would make mutant females MUCH less common than mutant males, which doesn’t seem to be the case. Also, if the mutant gene is only on the Y chromosome, it must always be expressed (barring mutations in the gene), so mutant kids could not be born to a couple where dad (or XY mom) was not a mutant, a principle often violated in the movie. Thus, the best conclusion is, the makers of X2 just didn’t do their homework. =)

Or Pyro was just being a beeyatch and deliberately causing trouble between Bobbys parents!
sigh I love Pyro…

Personally, I’m inclined to accept the “Pyro was just screwing with them” theory, or possibly the “Pyro doesn’t know what the heck he’s talking about” theory. I mean, if the Professor, or Jean, say, had made that statement, then I think that we could take it as canon. They’re both honest, and they both know a lot about mutation. But Pyro definitely likes stirring up trouble, and one gets the impression that he’s not exactly a model student, either.

This could be a topic for a whole other thread: Why is it assumed that characters in a work of literature must speak true, or speak for the author? As a side note, this also clears up difficulties in The Matrix (first one) and in Star Wars.

This is going to be long as I just got around to seeing X2 and there are already 7 pages of points other folks have brought up.

Re-Storm
She was worshipped as a godess for a while. IMHO this does not make the society doing the worshipping primitive. They’re farmers. Storm flies, controls the weather, and goes topless. If any traces of polytheism remained in the area before she arived, they would quickly become dominant again. The first time that Angel(Warren Worthington III, the mutant. Not the vampire with a soul) used his powers to save lives, he disguised himself with a robe and wig. Onlookers believed he was an actual angel.

Re-Genetics
Besides having all those impressive degrees, Charles Xavier also writes. His The Structure And Function Of X has been published in both cut and uncut editions. More information on the book is given in one of Marvel’s Year In Reviews.

Re-Magneto’s Powers
They’ve limited him for the films. Mags has exercised control over blood numerous times. IIRC he can levitate using the magnetic field of the planet itself. Unless they wanted to introduce inhibitor collars into the films, the only way to keep him in the plastic prison was to weaken him. (Of course magnetism is just half of electromagnetism and Mags should have been able to do all kinds of things with the wiring for the lights, the motors that retract the bridge etc. But that was one of the very few nitpicks I had with the film) OTOH- The skill and confidence with wich he used his powers was perfect. ‘I have 3 iron gumballs. I’m going to use them to kill you all and then escape. It should take about 5 seconds or so.’

Re-God Loves, Man Kills&Cerebro As A Weapon
Having had acopy since I was knee high to Logan, it was clear to me why people’s heads didn’t simply explode once Xavier started concentrating.
Exceedingly Minor Spoiler-Not Worth A Box
Charles Xavier is deeply and profoundly opposed to killing. It’s part of his core being and one of the things that make him and Magneto different. Deep inside his psyche, Prof X was fighting Stryker. He doesn’t have enough control to prevent himself from causing pain. But, he can keep from simply killing.
