Is it just me, or is today’s xkcd brilliant?

Okay…I usually adore xkcd but I totally don’t get this one. What are the green and red things they’re holding in the third frame? And why do they turn into Calvin and Hobbes?

Also, everybody knows that to be a great artist you must first suffer through the theory. No master programmer starts with Python. :stuck_out_tongue:

That one’s pretty good, but this one says Dope to me:

You are not alone.

a) I thought they were pies, but I’m not sure.

b) They didn’t. Think of the four-panel section and the wider section as separate, connected comics, if it helps.

(ETA: Gotcha by one minute, Indistinguishable! That almost makes up for me thinking those things were pies! Okay, not really.)

  1. They’re turtle shells, a la Mario Kart. 2. They don’t turn into Calvin and Hobbes; they crash into Calvin and Hobbes. (Though the third panel of the bottom comic is a little weird; it appears we see them at two places within the same panel, pre- and mid-crash)

Oh, I dunno. It depends on how you want to spend your life.

Oh, nooooo, my friend…

This is the Dope.

What Indistinguishable said. The whole strip was a beautiful C&H tribute. It was a recurring theme in C&H to have the two of them careening downhill in a wagon, discussing philosophy and crashing spectacularly at the end.

hehehe, when I first saw that one I sent it to all my family members. Then we all pointed fingers in a circle.

That comic is utterly brilliant, but I can’t go anywhere on the Internet anymore without some psycho holding it up as proof Mr. XKCD is talking about them.

And it’s happened several times on the SDMB already! :smack:

Oh, please. One can say it describes the SDMB (which it does) without meaning it was written specifically about the boards!

For some reason, I saw the second half and says “why does this remind me of Calvin and Hobbes?” And that, for me, enhanced the humor of the last panel GREATLY.

Brilliant Strip 11/10.

But it doesn’t describe the SDMB! It describes every message board, blog, personal website, social networking profile and any other Internet setting where people argue.

This isn’t tee ball and I don’t want to take part in “Everybody gets a trophy day.”

It’s a pretty safe bet that at any given time, someone is wrong on the Internet!

That’s why I don’t get much sleep.

So? I’m not sure what your point is. If I say “This Calvin & Hobbes strip reminds me of my Dad.” I’m certainly not saying the strip was about my Dad. If someone says “Clearly Randall Munroe is a Doper.” because of said strip than you’d have a point, but right now I just don’t see it.

Well, this is the first one I associated with the Dope…

I like the mention of the boring parts building character. Calvin’s dad always used the phrase “builds character” when trying to get Calvin to do something.
