xkcd thread

I had that dream last night.

Oh no, not again.

Different kind of fall - no petunias.

It was a great line but unfortunately Adams couldn’t leave it be. He invented a back story for the petunias which killed the joke.

I kinda have that dream a lot. But it’s more that I’m having a normal dream, and suddenly I realize that we’re not wearing masks and that everyone’s going to get infected. I then usually start hunting for something use for a mask, before realizing I just need to get out of there quickly–having somewhere to before waking up is a common feature in my dreams.

I think it may just be that, as I’m getting closer to waking up, I remember more things about the real world. And I actually have an oddly consistent dream world that tends to be set in the past.

(Sorry if that was too much about my dreams. But how often does that topic come up?

The joke was killed by Arthur as well.

Makes me wonder why 2007 was such an outlier…

Not something I dream about. Masks haven’t become a habit --more often than not, I still get halfway to the building before I remember to get the mask out of the car.

Assuming real numbers, the fact that it followed the lowest til now says something. Why was 2006 so low? I’d wonder if the recession had something to do with 2007? We comforted each other with hugs and socialized for support. Now we need the comfort and support but have fewer hugs and less socialization. I think year after we are going see lots and lots of hugs.

I think that may be an invalid assumption. It does say “estimated” and I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that really means “rectally extracted”.

We’ll, Munro is famous for his attention to detail.
So, (putting way too much thought into this…) assuming this is based on personal experience:
2006 is when he left NASA and started full time on xkcd, so he might have been too busy/distracted for human interactions.
2007 is (I think) when he met his wife, so love coulda made him significantly more touchy feely.
2010 was when she was diagnosed with cancer, also a hug inducing life event. And we all know about the dip in 2020.

I like this fanwank!

When did he get married? Knowing nothing about his life, I looked at the graph and guessed that there was some large family event in 2007, either a wedding or a funeral, that led to him hugging a lot of people he usually doesn’t see (or doesn’t hug).

2011, so that still twigs.

It leads to some other cool ones, like Osedax, the bone-eating worms. And one particular species of Osedax, O. mucofloris. The bone-eating snot flower.

2012, judging from his “ten-year cancerversary” sketch, upthread:

His wife’s cancer diagnosis would have been November 2010, presumably, and the strip shows them getting married before the two-year mark.

ETA: Nevermind, @mikecurtis has the goods. They got married in 2011.

I had a period of time when I lived in an apartment without easy access to laundry facilities.

The dishwasher doesn’t do a great job, but it gets the job done.

Then I would dry them in a warm oven.

I wonder - if you were to put the egg in a zip-lock bag, and put it in the top rack of the dishwasher, would it hard-boil?
