xupiter.com has taken over my pc...help!

Who the frig are these xupiter.com people? From out of nowhere (ok I know it was something I dowmloaded) xupiter.com keeps giving me pop-ups, keeps making itself my homepage, and is the default whenever I go to a webpage that is not available or times out.

I have deleted all xupiter files that I can find…but they keep coming back!

How can I get rid of this menace? Where can I find the ceo of xupiter.com inc so I can punch him in the nose? How can this possibly be a successful business model?

Download and run Ad-aware (from http://www.lavasoftusa.com) or Spybot Search and Destroy. They’ll clean it off (along with other things you may not realize are there).

I’ve never heard of these guys before, but I’m guessing that it’s spyware of some sort. Try going to Lavasoft and downloading Ad-aware. Running that should get rid of most, if not all of the spyware on your computer.

Dang, RealityChuck beat me to it. Great minds think alike, right Chuck?

Sure. And I beat you because I created a macro. You pretty much need it on the board these days.

Google Xupiter and you’ll find a lot of nasty stuff about them.

Xupiter’s a pain in the arse, but has been around for quite some time.
Ad-aware should clean it up for you. Here’s an uninstaller… And More than you wanted to know about it.

Looking at Daizy’s link…

Daizy’s ubersmart.

That’s where I buy all of my ubers.

Well, thank you kind sir. I try. It gets a little ugly when my caffeine level drops though.

From the June 2003 issue of Smart Computing Magazine: “Xupiter is a browser plug-in that’s the latest in a long line of Internet-Most-Unwanted programs that annoy and exasperate experienced and novice computer users alike. Xupiter’s creators claim that it can’t install itself, but there are numerous reports…”

It’s crap and the creators are liars. (My opinion)

The article goes on: Xupiter appears to be periodically modified to avoid detection…beefing up IE’s security settings is the best way to avoid Xupiter."

You can:
Click Tools, Internet Options, Security tab.
Highlight Internet, click Custom Level and configure the following options:

Download Signed ActiveX Controls…Prompt
Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls…Disable
Initialize and Script ActiveX Controls Not Marked As Safe…Disable
Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-Ins…Prompt
Script ActiveX Controls Marked Safe For Scripting…Prompt

Click OK, Yes.

Even though I haven’t picked up Xupiter, I changed my settings but the ones on Prompt ask too often and a no brings up another window saying pages may not load or run right so I just set them to Disable to. I still get the window saying the page might not load or run or whatever it is right but so far only one site I’ve been to didn’t load right.

The article says not to use the uninstall utility at Xupiter’s homepage. Apparently it doesn’t uninstall and may actually cause more problems.

I think the other posts in this thread have pretty much covered the way to get rid of it so I won’t post the steps for modifying the Registry if all else fails.
