Y'all wanna look at mah human leg?

‘I’ve got a leg!’ – Vyvyan, The Young Ones

‘Leg’ is not a searchable term, so I appologise if this has already been posted. I heard about it on NPR the other day, and CNN just had a story.

I’ve just read elsewhere that the man who had lost his leg in a plane crash did get custody of his limb. But in the meantime Shannon Whisnant, the bargain shopper, was charging people to have a look at it ($1 for kids, $3 for adults). Regular freakshow going on there! Whisnant argued that the leg belongs to him because he bought it, and that if Wood wanted his leg so badly he should have ‘stuck in in a duffel bag and taken it home. It doesn’t take that much rOOooom.’ (He had a really weird – sort of whiny – accent on ‘room’.)

Dude. A leg isn’t ‘property’ like a used smoker or whatever. WTF do you really want with a leg? You may pick up a few dollars, but it ain’t gonna make you rich! Or do you just think it’s funny that you have (had) possession of a living person’s body part?

Sometimes I wonder about peoples’ thought processes.

Finally a news story that NC can be proud of after all that negative Duke publicity.

This story is just bizarre all around. Ok, so this guy wants to be buried whole. I can understand that. But perhaps there are better places to store your severed leg than in your barbecue. Sadly I have to admit that I am curious what state that leg is in. Doesn’t sound like it was well-preserved based on where it was found.

I wasn’t familiar with Maiden’s location in NC before the story was in the paper and thought it must be “off the beaten path” to put it politely. But no, it appears it is only 30-ish miles outside of Charlotte.

I’d offer to race him for it.

“Is that a leg?”

“Waiter, there’s a leg in my soup”

‘Or are you happy to see me?’

One of the all-time classics in the genre of unexpected bonuses turning up in items bought at auction, dates back to my days in Davenport, Iowa.

A guy bought a pickup truck at a police unclaimed vehicle auction. While cleaning out brush and debris from the pickup bed, he found two human corpses.

I’m not sure what the ensuing homicide investigation turned up, but the whole affair was a bit embarassing for the police department.
