(a) The Yankees spend 150% of what the Sox spend. That’s not insignificant. Subtract the BoSox salaries from the Yankees salaries, and it’s still more than fully half the teams in MLB spent on their tems.
(b) The Sox spend what they spend to compete with the Yankees. They have to play them 19 times a season, and they have to beat them.

Skutir said the Yankees spend 150% of what the Sox spend, not 150% more than what the Sox spend. Perhaps you simply misread it, and maybe it’s just been a long time since you’ve done percents. 187 is, indeed, about 150% of 127.
I’m not sure how to parse “150% more than” into math terms, but it might look like Y = B + (B x 1.5), which means that 150% more than 127 million would be 319 million, which is obviously not the Yankees’ salary. What did you mean by “150% more than?”
