Just happy…got a shock last year when we owned $2400 to the federal goverment because I screwed up my withholdings on my W4…this year, had a baby, a full year of house payments, and my wife upped her withholdings, so was very glad to see the balance turn essentially 180 degrees this year. Woo hoo!
I’m with you on this one.
We bought a new house in 2008, and my SO didn’t take into account the fact that the mortgage was starting over (so a higher % of the payment is interest) and that we paid points to get a lower interest rate, and that our property taxes went up. Actually, the balance owed to us is more then we prefer. We’d rather not have let the government hold that money for us, but it sure beats the alternatives.
When I was single I always had payroll take out a little extra, because I’m not every good at saving and the forced savings paid for a small vacation. Nowadays, my husband tweaks our withholdings so we (nearly) neither owe or get a refund. I know it’s better how he does it, but I miss the feeling of “Whee! Free money, I can spend any way I want!”.
I hope you get to spend yours on something cool, Jman!
I had way too big a refund - due to being laid off and also on medical leave last year. IOW, they had been keeping money out at my yearly salary, but since I didn’t make that kind of money it was too much withholding.
