I first saw that through a NON-SDMB link and I got a fucking kick out of it. I had my face squished against my monitor, the speakers still loud from a previous CD I had played. I jumped about 3 feet back, almost peed my pants and my heart didn’t stop beating hard for at least 45 minutes. But I still found it funny.
Why it’s bannable is beyond my understanding. If you have that weak of a heart, I recommend that people get off the net and sit in a dark room with no electricity and only a quiet toilet.
Other than that, it was funny the first time I saw that, the fifth time still cracked me up.
Sheesh, some people have no sense of humor.
As for it being worthy of banning, I find that utter bullshit. Good God. I have hardly a thing to say as to why that strikes me as stupid, but it does. If you click on ANY link ANYWHERE, you don’t know what you are up against. It’s the nature of life.
< what the fuck was that? Oh, a plane just flew at just a couple of feet of my roof. HUH? Yep, scared the shit out of me…well that’s fucking LIFE. >
As I said in my earlier post, if it was posted as an unlabelled link in some random thread, or as an op, sure, it could be successfully argued to break the ‘don’t be a jerk’ rule. Since, though, it was posted in a thread ABOUT it, with ample warning that it was going to do something supposedly potentially scary/startling, calling it jerky is…odd.
actually if is this was one of those links where its a empty room and all of a sudden someone jumps up in the picture , the first one i ever seen was posted here before the hack
So I dont know if the mods didnt catch it back then or theres a rule change i dont know of
Aw, dammit. I wish I had understood before I clicked the link. I actually do have that weak of a heart and now it is hurting, you p****.
Okay, in all fairness, if I had been paying close enough attention and had read all the following posts to the link, I would have realized that I didn’t want to click, but now that I did, yuck! I see why it might be a bannable offense. At least, without a strong warning for those who were whooshed! by the “wait for it.”
Posting something like that for the purpose of scaring the hell out of people, which is what happens when there is no warning at all for what the link is, is not really very nice.
And if it scares the hell out of an Admin, well, that can supremely piss off an Admin.
When Admins get supremely pissed off, all bets are off.
The link scared the fuck out of me. And I don’t like that. Not. At. All. Yeah, real life is scary too, that’s why I’m up at 4-something am. But by God, on my own Board, I don’t have to put up with shit that is solely intended to make my heart actually hurt from pounding, and I know TubaDiva feels the same way. So I’ve said that I’m going to ban anyone who posts things like that without an unambiguous warning on my Board as well.
I certainly wouldn’t have banned someone who posted it before a warning. But once a clear warning has been made, well, what can I say?
IIRC, before the posts were lost, the SDMB Staff also said they will ban people who post the “Shut Down the Internet” link as well.
I was forwarded this picture by email a few days ago. It was attached with the message, “what’s wrong with this picture? Study the room carefully, and make sure your sound’s turned on, cause it’ll give you clues” (the bastard :D).
So I clicked on it, and started the obligatory, “Where’s Wally?”-style scan of the room to discover what was wrong. About 30 seconds through my scan, a screaming face appeared, accompanied by the scream. Admittedly it was a tad startling, but I simply thought, “ah, it’s something to do with a murder”, and carried on searching, trying to relate my rather strange ‘clue’ to the picture.
A few minutes later the face appeared again, and I realized the point of the picture was that I should be terrified by this sudden apparition.
To be quite honest, it was a bit of a let-down. But considering it’s related through a computer (as opposed to, say, a 20-foot cinema screen with thundering surround sound) it’s commendably scary.
It seems to me (And a few others in here) that the person who posted that link was simply clarifying/answering inquiries as to what the fuck the OP was talking about.
That’s jerkish?
Whatever. What constitutes jerkish behavior around here is getting harder and harder to follow these days.
Whenever anyone forwards me anything - funny story, picture, web site, whatever, I never forward it. I always assume that if I got it, it’s blazing around the internet everywhere, and there’s no need for me to send it on. I’ve had six people forward this thing to me so far.
Explanation - we have had enough complaints about that kind of link, and the joke is old enough, that we don’t want people posting that kind of link anymore.
The rule is new, which is why we have taken no action against people that posted it in the past.
TubaDiva put her warning in here because this thread was discussing the link. She also put a warning in the recent MPSIMS thread that contained the same (or a similar, I didn’t check) link.
I think now is a good time for a similar web site. “What’s wrong with this picture?” it will ask, and have a photo of a seemingly normal room. And then, after looking at it for 30 seconds, nothing happens. Turns out it IS a photo of a seemingly normal room. For how long will how many people will stare at it waiting to be spooked, I wonder?
Of course, it’ll have to be done in Flash to preserve the effect. How hard is it to make a copletely still photo in Flash?
Make a new .fla file. Make a layer with one frame and dump in the image. If you want music, you just have the layer with the picture last for the duration of the music layer, then have it repeat with it’s done.
I think the you post a link to spooky face in a picture thing was from the LAST time those pictures circled the boards.
Dunno what caused it, probably trusting souls with weak bladders who clicked in link after link after link. Umm anyway, some admin said no more posting those to the boards…if you do its a ban.
So if anyone bothered to do a search before they posted to this thread…
Well, I actually wasn’t referring to anything anyone did in this thread, just as to why TubaDiva and others who run Boards might want to not have people posting the link.
But since you brought it up - the first occurance of the link in this thread is described simply as:
If that is “clarifying”, then it seems to me that what constitutes “clarifying” is getting harder and harder to follow these days as well.
That’s cute how you tried to use my own words against me.
<snort>
But come on, Anthracite, you’re parsing my usage of the word “clarifying”?
What else was it?
The third post in a particularily obscure thread topic essentially asks for a link- "You wouldn’t want to flesh out your little rant a bit, would you Tretiak? Let us know what the hell you’re foaming about?”. A couple of posts later, and a few more requests from people wondering what the hell the OP was all about, a person posts an obvious link with the words, “Wait for it”.
I don’t know what that is to you, but to me, it’s a clarification/answering an inquiry type post.
The stuff you have to defend around here sometimes. Sheesh!
The OP was clear. Everyone was talking about what it was all about. I don’t see how posting a link that has already been clearly described in both of these ways is a bannable offense. However, YMMV, as IANAM.
