Heh, so sorry… but ya HAD to see that one coming…
My mom would shit herself If she evr knew I was listening to good ol’ Mr. Manson… I mean, Its bad enough I talk to boys!!! whats next? freinds?
No one’s really asked about my choices in music for a while now…though my friend Jamie used to hate riding in my car. “Neil…your music is scaring me.” (For the record, she was the one into the metal and stuff. I scared her with weird sounding obscure stuff.)
The other day, I bought two CDs from the local record store (which I love). I bought Tool’s Lateralus and the opera Pagliacci. The guy at the counter was wearing a Tool shirt and heartily approved Lateralus. “What’s this other one? I don’t know this band.”
“It’s an opera, man. About clowns and people killing each other.”
“That’s pretty messed up.”
“Yep, opera’s as bad as metal like that.”
He was mean or anything, but it was funny.
Ok come out of the closet time, I like (Marilyn) Manson, not all of it, not the whole time but every now and then I have the urge to listen to him, as it happens with The Doors, Queen, Rage against the Machine, Frank Sinatra and many other bands/artists, so what?
For the appearance question that ** Dijon Warlock **asked, I suppose we are not talking about KISS (which I like too) in here?
For all thats worth I am 25 and with that closer to the washed up foggies (30+) then the disposable teens (20-).
Worse: Us. (insert evil laughter here) If she does, send her here.
On the subject of cheap cds, I’ve had some seriously good luck on Ebay, including finding ones that aren’t even available here in the US (recently snagged a Russian import of a German band from a seller in Canada for about $10.00 US). I’m lucky, there’s a good used cd store here locally, where like-new disks by current bands at $7-10 are common. I recently grabbed “Test for Echo” by Rush for three bucks, which is a good deal or bad, depending on your opinion of it. I was sufficiently content.
More of an opinion than a question, but just mine. I certainly don’t argue that some very talented people make appearances an integral part of their act, but at the same time such an emphasis opens up the avenue of relying on appearance over musical talent to attract an audience. Not wishing this thread to devolve into an argument over whether a given act is “good” or not (which is often based in opinion rather than objective criteria), it’s just something that hits me personally as a bit of a red flag: the more the theatrics are the central identity, the more likely (IMO) they are there to take up the slack in the musical ability.
Most of my favorite performers appear on stage with nothing but their instruments and enough light to see them by. No makeup or fake boobs are necessary to draw an audience.
You may talk about KISS if you like.
magic8ball, don’t worry about what other people think about what kind of music you listen to. Everyone is always going to have an opinion about something they don’t like. I can’t stand my mother’s taste in music and she can’t stand mine (it doesn’t stop us from ribbing each other about it!) but we come to a compromise when it comes to jazz.
Each to his/her own.
Fuck off Bub! When you speak of us 30+ people, respectfully use the term “experienced” not “washed up”. Sheesh! Kids these days…
If you thought you had it bad, try being an investment manager that listens to M. Manson. I get shit all the time. But then it all gets paid back in full when people start singing along to “Walk like an Egyptian” or sumptin’…Oh yeah, just listen to the meaning of those 80’s lyrics big guy. Ugh.

Another Manson listener here. I’ve never gathered that much flack from people about it. Different crowds, I guess. You gotta listen to what you like, and don’t worry about what other people think.
I haven’t much liked anything I’ve heard from Manson in years, but I still like a bit of his earlier stuff (“Portrait…” is awesome and “Antichrist…” is about half/half for me). I don’t listen to it too often, but on occasion.
Kinda funny to think about this one show I went to in '95 … it was actually Danzig (didn’t like 'em then, don’t like 'em now), but the two openers were Korn and Manson. I ended up hanging out with both bands before and after their performances, because they were both just lowly opening acts. Manson was gaining in popularity, but Korn was still rather unknown. They were all pretty friendly and down-to-earth guys back then. Can’t vouch for the guys now.
I don’t think he’s a freak at all. I think he’s a mediocre musician with a great knack for marketing. The same has worked well for other people (Alice cooper, Ozzy).
More power to him, I guess.
As far as what is lacking, the answer is quite a lot.
Just carry a lunchbox around with you and hit people with it.
I’m 31 and I like Manson. I think of him as a goth Madonna, in the way he has sculpted his image in persona and been able to change popular music and feed off the mainstream. He may nor “r00l” in my book, but i like him enough to play him at the club and relish in the confusion it can cause when I open with Britney’s moaning and smash cut into Incest Cake and Sodomy.
NIN in fine if you like overrated gothypop. Stack it with your TON CD’s, I’ll stick to Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division.
No obligatory Onion link? Slackers!
Are you going to go see Marilyn when his tour comes to Yellowknife next month, magic8ball? He’s going to be playing at the roller rink, along with Vanilla Ice, Foghat and Bachman Turner Overdrive. Sounds like a pretty hot show.
So, Mr. 8ball, can we assume you’ve never sneered at someone buying a CD of Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, The London Symphony Orchestra, Louis Prima, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Patsy Cline or Robert Johnson?
Ever listen to any of their songs?
Oops. Sorry. Is that Ms. 8Ball?
I’m kind of disturbed by being called a “washed-up foggie.”
And yet I’m strangely pleased!
Jonscribe… Yes. Ms, if you don’t mind.
Bob scene… are you joking? Cuz if you are, that is NOT cool… I SO want to meet him. I admire poeple that can be so successfully negative.
The only music I have ever made fun of in my life is Pop. And only then britney spears, N*SYNC and Backstreet boys.
I enjoy classical, actually. The Robin Hood sound track is one of my favorites.
And none of you are “washed up foggies”.
You’re just old.
Tomcat, I must say, I admire you. What do your clients think?
Since I listen to Marylin manson for his music and NOT for the way he acts( I could care less if he ate mice or drank blood), I don’t really think that what they lack in music they make up in appearence. I must admit though, his cd cover is very interesting.
I don’t have a problem with Mr. Manson and his band at all…personally, that is. IMO, he’s just out there to shock people, and he looks like he’s having a good time of it (pertaining to his visual attempts, such as bodysuits, off color pictures, etc. and not destruction).
As far as his music, I just don’t find it challenging to listen to. His guitarist, Twiggy Ramirez I think, as I read in an interview in (I believe it was) Guitar Player, professes to having no real ability other than “ripping off” licks he has heard.
His drummer, Ginger Fish, while posessing a legitimate background as such, seems to have foregone his abilities in order to play along to a pre-programmed drum track as cleanly as possible. In other words, he’s still playing up there, but if he were to stop for any reason, the show would still go on. In two interviews I read (one of which is in Modern Drummer, May 1997, pp 18-27), he seems to pride himself a bit too much, IMO, on playing double bass drums at 186 bpm while dodging mic’ stands thrown by his employer at him for whatever reason.
His other musicians, I don’t really know about; admittedly I’m biased. But, to me, his music is rather predictable. While I have paid attention to a few of his songs while growing up, I moved on to stuff that challenges my mind with the creative use of chords, meter, etc. Everyone has their own taste; I’m not out to squash that. But, his music doesn’t exactly convince me to overlook his more controversial and destructive on and off stage antics.
Um, while the soundtrack to the film Robin hood is a very nice orchestral work, it isn’t classical. I love soundtrack orchestral works, but I have a hard time slogging through some of the old composers works. Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and their ilk are classical.
Manson leaves me cold. Just this generation’s Alice Cooper.
