Yet another futile but pro forma discussion starring Der Trihs.

You beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing…I like him in CS, he’s entertaining and has some good points.

He’s not all bad.

Actually, I think he’s in his late thirties, if I’m remembering correctly.

Anybody else envisioning the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons now?

I understand. He’s gotten under my skin a few times. His posts in GD still rile me up sometimes, but I have to remember that it’s my fault if I let him get to me. I can’t let his willful ignorance upset me.

It looks to me like you’re trying to make the comparison:

A few Hezbollah killing a few Israelis (all soldiers) is to Israel killing lots of Lebanese (some of them civilians)

as

A few Catholic priests molesting some altar boys is to The U.S. using FAE on the Vatican.

I do not believe this is a valid comparison.

He got picked on in High School, and so now he thinks America = Evil. Oh, and Religion = Evil.

Many times I’ve considered setting up a Pit thread that I can reference instead of replying to his idiotic posts in GD. Somehow, though, it just didn’t seem worth the effort.

Is it America that he thinks is evil, or just Republicans?

Both. Maybe his philosophy is best summed up as Humans = Evil.

Not that I start many pit threads, but I’ve been tempted myself…especially after I’ve lost it a few times in GD and been spanked by the Mods for what obviously (well, to me) were highly provocative statements. In the end though I didn’t think it worth the effort…especially when I realized that he really believes that tripe. He’s NOT trolling but has his wierd convictions, ridiculously over the top as they are.

Oh, definitely both. Though he thinks Bush is the top of the heap, evil wise (I’ve actually seen him compare Bush to Hitler, with Bush coming out on top by a nose). You liberals, you anti-war types, you anti-Bush Democrats? Us centrists who didn’t vote for Bush? We all get lumped together into one vast pile of evil because, you know, we haven’t launched an armed revolt yet to oust the evil regime and hang them upside down from flag poles jeering at them before we shoot them like dogs. Since we haven’t done this we are party to the evil…blah blah blah.

Some may think I’m exaggerating here (and I AM…but only to a certain degree), but a careful reading of some of Der’s more colorful posts will reveal that he’s definitely a wild and crazy kind of guy (emphasis on ‘crazy’).
Funniest thing I remember though was 'luci defending him in some thread or other. The guy was SO over the top it was actually funny…and there was elucidator trying heroically to help him out or to make excusses for what he was saying. Eventually 'luci gave it up as a lost cause I think.

And while we are at it, can we drop this “disproportionate use of force” nonsense? I guess instead of military proportions, Israel should have demanded Hezbollah give them 10 soldiers. Israel then could kill eight of the soldiers and take the other two into custody. You can’t get any more 1:1 than that.

Hey did you guys know that **Der Trihs ** is Red Shirt backwards? Well actually it is shirT reD backwards, but I think he meant reD shirT.

I got nothin’.

Perhaps you will advise just why you thought it necessary to shoehorn me into this conversation?

Doors, I don’t know what you’re complaining about. It’s not like Der Trohl ever undermines your position by agreeing with you.

Eh, I 'm not sure there’s much point to this particular Pitting. It’s not as if Der Trihs is hiding his political viewpoint under a bushel, unless he’s actually some sort of right-wing plant intended make a convenient case for liberals being ranting nutbars. I haven’t noticed a plethora of “You rock!” posts agreeing with any of his comments, so I suspect most folks know what sort of entertainment they’re getting and don’t need to be warned about him.

Now, Pitting him for being completely impervious to reason, or for being a one-trick pony, that I could maybe get behind.

I was extremely tired…and frankly it still strikes me as funny. Sort of the image of Toohey defending Elmer Fud. Sorry if I offended you 'luci…wasn’t intentional.

Well, no harm done, I suppose. At least until I find out who this “Toohey” is.

Please, nobody tell him.

It’ll be funnier that way.

Airman Doors- I have read and usually agree with your posts. However, I think there is a difference here that you aren’t seeing. Israel is a country with elected officials by the citizens. Beirut is also a country and has citizens. BUT- those citizens did NOT elect the Hezbollah fighters that use their country as they wish. Sure, some (many?) agree with the ideals, but those that don’t have no pull, nor control. These Hezbollah members are launching uncontrolled rockets at Israel (kinda point and shoot I think is a good analogy, and who cares where the rockets land- not very humane). But, Isreal is attacking Hezbollah in Beirut, and trying TRYING to protect its citizens. Isreal is unfortunately going to kill Beirut citizens who have no control over what is happening in their country. Is this wrong? Now that I think more and more, I believe it is. Isreal is surrounded by enemy states. God, I wish our race would kick aside religion fundamentalism and realize we’re all just lives on a spinning globe, and nothing we do will change that. I wish this world could be rid of such hate as seems to be all around it. We’re all just people that were born, have to live, maybe raise a family, then die. Whatever the afterlife brings should be nothing to us- we’re here now, have to live, and so let’s live. God, life is so depressing. Funny that religion should bring meaning and purpose to life, yet it seems to bring death to so many.

In general the OP points out the error commonly made on the left and not just with Der Trihs, namely seeing little/no difference between a military action and a criminal action.

Piffle. Its certainly true that as a general bias, we prefer our military might be reserved for situations where lethal force is urgently required. We do not approve of adventures. We most especially do not approve of military force to advance the sophomoric geo-political agenda of dime store Bismarcks.
