YO JOE!

YES!!!

It’s back!

Image Comics has brought back the 80’s version of G.I.Joe, in comic book form!!

<sings>A Real American Hero,
Gi Joe is There</sings>

Most of the Joes are here, Cobra has re-formed.

And…

The Baroness looks as good in a black leather catsuit as ever.

I loved the Cartoons, I would get up at 6am every morning just to watch that stupid show. The comics were just as cool. Good news, I’ll have to tell my brother about this one. He actually got a tattoo to match the one that Snake Eyes had.

Have either of you checked out the G.I.Joe Movie DVD. It actually has all of the PSA’s as an extra. Talk about value!

Well, now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

I have issues 1-40something of the Marvel GI Joe comic buried in the basement of my parents’ house. (Was it Marvel? Enh.) It’s a time like this when I want to go back and reread them.

There was no continuity until issue #3 or so. And Destro! Introduced around #13. Then Serpentor. “Do you mean that the invention of the pizza led to the downfall of Vercingetorix and the domination of what is now France and Belgium?” “Of course not … it was just a random memory.”

Ok, I suck.

Oh yeah, I’m all over this. I got issue #1 the day it hit the racks. I’ve also got issue #1 of the original comic books and somewhere in a box at my parents’ house there’s a metric ton of action figures, fighters, tanks, ATVs, motorcycles, etc. Watching the cartoon was an after-school ritual for me.

I’m liking the new comic already. Outstanding artwork, references to the original series for the old time fans, but still easy to follow for people new to the title. I hope this lasts longer than the other series and the don’t get into the SF stuff. I started losing interest when they started introducing new characters to keep up with the toy line and the plots got less military oriented. (The whole Serpentor thing, and that one guy who was half man-half snake: that’s not why I got into the comic and just pushed me away from it.)

Hasbro apparently isn’t going to push them to include the toys this time, so hopefully it won’t turn into a monthly ad for the new action figures available at Wal-Mart.

Yeah, my girlfriend picked it up. It was a hoot watching the PSAs with our friends.

We especially liked the one with the three little gay boys about wearing lifejackets.

My favorite episode of the animated series(and the funniest cartoon ever made) was “Beware The Viper!”.

I haven’t seen the new comic except for a few clips on the web, but I admit it certainly looks good.

Truth to tell, though, I don’t expect it to surpass the original comic book written by Larry Hama. That stuff was simply awesome – a “kids’ book” that didn’t pander to the audience. Real-life military hardware, real-life military tactics (remember the use of artillery vs. infantry in the Cobra Civil War?), and characters with actual depth and personality. The comic hit the skids in the last twenty issues or so, but most of the time, it was a joy to behold.

(And let’s face it, Osama bin Laden would be dog meat if we could get Snake Eyes into Afghanistan for just a week… )

My favorite was when the Baroness got in disguise, flirted with her boyfriend, and then had his ancestral home destroyed because he flirted back.

That was a role model.

Are we talking reprintings? If so, I hope they have the whole Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Hard/Soft masters series. I was so into that when I was a kid!

Not reprints.

New material!
But, there’s always comic shops for back issues.

Quick update – I heard that Marvel Comics got the right to reprint their old Transformers and G.I. Joe comics. I smell some deluxe reprint collections coming soon…
