That describes me too. It is very frustrating to me that some people I do not consider any smarter than me seem to understand it so well.
Sometimes I wonder if they really understand it as well as they think they do.
remembering names.
I occasionally forget my own children’s names. I have my sibling down pat though, I don’t remember forgetting their names. Forgetting them sometimes happens, but at least not their names. As for people I meet-I can’t remember their names after about 2 minutes. Seriously, if I am introduced to 3 people, it is likely I will have forgotten the first name by the time the last person shakes my hand. 
Now, ask me about a news article I read as a kid, I may surprise us both. Events and things that interest me, I am quite good at. People-well when I forget my wife’s name I am really good at covering that up…
I often will know that I have seen a person somewhere if I run into them. Their name-not a chance.
The restrooms at work have these hand dryers that have motion sensors. I stand there waving my hands under the dryer trying to find the right spot while I’m dripping water all over the floor. I finally hit the sweet spot and WHOOOSSH! Huge blast of air that lasts all of 5 seconds before shutting off. My hands are still wet and now I have to find the sweet spot all over again. A lot of other people seem to have this problem too so I’ll blame the dryer and not the user. There’s also a paper towel dispenser in the bathroom but it’s always empty. I wonder why…
