I know there’s at least one other Says You! fan here on the boards, but for those who haven’t heard it, it’s a quiz show on NPR. It’s a bit like the old celebrity panel game shows they used to have on TV, the quiz is just a springboard to launch as many quips and puns as possible. But the questions can still be darn tricky. And they ask for listeners to send in questions as well. I just sent in this one, and I thought my fellow dopers would like a crack at it as well.
Some of these are easy, some are hard (I hope). To keep the thread going for a little while, please just answer one at a time. No web searches for the answers, either. And if you’re a panelist from Says You!, go away now just in case they use this on the show.
I’ll give you the beginning and end points of a famous journey, real, fictional or metaphorical, and for ten points, tell me who or what made the journey. Not all of the journeys were successfully completed, I will give you the intended destination for each trip. For example, if I said “Southhampton, England to New York City”, the answer would be “H.M.S. Titanic”.
From Roosevelt Field to Le Bourget.
From Frankfurt, Germany to Lakehurst, New Jersey.
From Superior, Wisconsin to Cleveland, Ohio.
From Kendall Square to Jamaica Plain.
From Baikonur to Saratov.
From Mexico City to Derna.
If anybody else can think of some more good questions of this type, let’s hear 'em.
1. From Roosevelt Field to Le Bourget.Charles Lindberg: Spirit of St. Louis
2, 3, and 5 are gimme’s, as well. 4 and 6 were a bit tougher. I know where 4 is, but don’t know who made any special trips, there. (I’ll give you extra points for originality with 6.)
Correct, of course. I was trying to make them harder as they went along. The first one’s a gimme, the second one’s pretty easy, but after that you have to know your stuff.
NOW I get it. And it IS a dang clever one… even though, strictly speaking, it’s not an actual journey, IS it?
Still, bravo to the author. And semper fi.
Would you have gotten this one so quickly if there weren’t just a thread about it? And it’s okay to give the actual answer.
I assume you’re going for Paul Revere, and that’s not correct. I think he’d be “From Charlestown to Concord”, but I’d have to do a bit of research to make sure.
If you read the instructions, I covered that possibility.
Still don’t have confirmed answers on numbers 2 and 4.
Not certain, but I’d have to guess The Orient Express.
ding Ten points, Gazelle From Hell. Although astorian certainly knew the answer, and tomndebb claimed to, I like to have actual answers just to be certain. What with fighting ignorance and all.
“Wrong-way” Corrigan. I knew “Floyd Bennet Field” sounded familiar, it just took a little while to remember.
The only thing I can think of connecting Mexico City and what sounds like a vaguely Russian place-name is Leon Trotsky. Did he get that awful headache in Mexico City and end up buried in Derna?
