You have selected 1 post that is not part of this thread: What is this about?

The last couple of replies I have made have had this written below “You have selected 1 post that is not part of this thread” together with a link to a “suggested quote” In each case the selected post is part of the thread and is what I intended to reply to.

Out of curiousity I tried clicking on the “Quote this post as well” link when replying to PSXer’s post in this thread
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=14373250&posted=1#post14373250

The result was to add a post from a completely different thread, as below:

I presume this is not the intended result of this process and therefore needs fixing. Meanwhile I’m off to see what other curious juxtapositions of posts may be made…

It looks like the link always goes to Annie-Xmas’ post. Nonetheless this is pretty fortuitous:

It happened to me a while back. It appears to be an artifact of selecting multi-quote and then not actually using the multi-quote in a reply.

I didn’t select multi-quote just the standard Quote.

I believe it will also happen if you hit quote on the same post that you multiquoted on. The only way I’ve found to get rid of it is to go ahead and include it, then delete it before posting.

This isn’t an error. It just means that you quoted something in another thread but you never submitted a reply that included the quote. It happens to me all the time. I frequently forget about or change my mind about replying and this shows up the next time I compose a reply. In fact, as I type this reply, the notice “You have selected 1 post that is not part of this thread. Quote this post as well, or deselect this post.” appears right below where I’m typing.

Thanks, I am enlightened. I don’t remember starting a replt to Annie’s post but it’s the kind of thing I might have done so that’s probably it.

You can also select “deselect this post” and the option will go away. That quote will no longer hover around ready to be added to any thread to which you reply.
