I can’t understand why did they think an allegedly PR photo-op needed to be classified to begin with. According to the article, the local authorities were warned, but specifically told not to disclose information about it. What exactly did they think was going to happen? Even if they didn’t want to disclose any specific details, even just a vague warning to the public along the line of “In the coming week, the air force may be conducting some exercises in the vincinity of NYC. You may see some low flying military aircraft.” would have gone a long way.

And is this “policy” now? It was a photo op. Although if you want to debate policy, we can certainly discuss why we’re all being told left and right to conserve-conserve-conserve! while the government is fueling up a 747 to fly around with fighter jets in tow to do a photo op with the Statue of Liberty.
You really can’t see why a low-flying 747 over New York, a city that was attacked using similar aircraft just seven and a half years ago, being escorted by a pair of fighter jets, could legitimately be mistaken for another hijacking? I wouldn’t be calling other people dumb, if I were you.
Someone, or a number of someones, need to lose their jobs for this stunt.

Although I can’t vouch for the authenticity, one news report I saw said that agencies given notice were specifically advised by the FAA not to tell the public.
What is up with the FAA? First they didn’t want to release figures on bird-plane encounters; now this. Is Dick Cheney running the FAA?
Someone sure as hell is a fucking idiot. I’m a pilot and certainly not overly worried about such things, nor do I live in NYC, but if I saw a 747 sized airplane flying low overhead trailed by military jets I sure would worry. Keep it classified? What kind of an imbecile thought of that? How the FUCK do you HIDE a 747 flying overhead? I’d call it retarded but I don’t want to insult the mentally handicapped.
Not only that, somebody on the plane was using the convenient folding tray to indulge his electronics hobby!
