Last week was the league Sweepstakes. We found out last night at the banquet what the results were. It turns out, thanks in no small part to my 97 handicap, that I won 1st place high handicap series! I also won high-handicap game for the second-half of the season, not the sweepstakes. My team tied for second for the second half of the season and we won 3rd place in the team handicap series for the season. This was the first time I’ve been on a league. My average went from 97 to 117 and my handicap went from 117 to 97. I’m fairly pleased. I think I’ll take part in the Show Me Classic Tournament next September.
Shoot, a 97 handicap?? How do they figure handicaps for your league?
I only get out about twice a year to bowl, but I always manage to break a 100.
My best game ever was 247. 7 strikes in a row that game.
I’d bet my lifetime average is about 130 though.
Handicap for the league I bowl in is figured based on 90% of 225.
from the United States Bowling Congress rule book:
I don’t want to sound too skeptical, but if your average is 130 and have bowled 247 while only bowling a couple of times a year, then you might want to start practicing weekly and go professional because that seems like quite a bit of talent. With 7 strikes in a row, if you got gutter balls the rest of the time you’d get a 180. To get to 247, you’d have to get 6 and 7 with Spares in the other frames. Unless you hit a 9/ in one frame at least a 5- in the open and two strikes in the 10th, it would be nearly impossible with any open frames. That’s talent.
I forget my exact handicap, but I know every team wanted me because I totally sucked. My average started at 60 and rose to 90, getting me the most improved trophy that year.
Bowling is not something I’m drawn to. But the beer kept me coming back!
I’m in my second year of bowling on a team. Shirley, you done gone total middleclass!
And I don’t know anything about handicapping and whatnot. It is a forgien language too me.
It makes no sense to me. But my average is 111, but since I’ve switched to a big girl ball, a 12 lb, (named Margeret) I’m in the 120-130 range, with brief shots into the 150’s and 170’s. Shirl, you are da bomb!
We finished fourth for the season. Wooooooot and tonight is our last night where it is ‘9 pin no tap’ and I have no idea what the hell that is but everyone else is excited.
Oh. and we gets our prize money.
I barely get to bowl at all when I’m at college, but I usually go with my HS friends when we have time and we’re at home. My average is about a 130 or 140, and my highest game was a 197. Over the last year or so I’ve been gradually moving from a nice amateur straight throw to an actual curve, and once I got over the initial change, it’s helped a lot.
Of course, the REAL fun comes in good old New England style Candlepin Bowling. You poor people in other parts of the country don’t know what you’re missing!
My banquet in tonight. My team sucked, but I did pretty well for most of the season (and it’s all about me-screw the team). Got my average up to 192, then for some reason in mid Feb, I forgot what I was doing and couldn’t hit anything. Ended up the season at 185. Nice 7 pin drop in average in 2 months.
Ah well, still a good way to spend one night a week, talking stupid and having a few adult beverages. Getting too nice out now though to stay inside for activities.
Oh BTW Shirley, a “9 pin tap” tournament is where you count a pinfall of 9 as a strike. Usually pretty fun, and you can get some high scores if you usually leave a lot of single pin spares (since they’ll count as strikes)
No, it was luck. I throw a straight ball and I managed to hit the pocket 7 times in a row on a very forgiving lane. That was twenty years ago.
NOW, I bowl only a couple of times a year, back then it was more often.
Well, that makes more sense. I still wish I could get that lucky more often. My high is 217.
Ha, I think the only reason I might have a higher average than you’d expect is because I throw a straight ball. I never gutter the thing, unless I’m going for some crazy spare. I’m pretty good at picking up single pin spares, I don’t have to hang the ball out there and hope it breaks. It’s not very exciting bowling but it is somewhat effective.
Yep, me loves my bowling handicap.
When I bowled in a league my avearge was 168. I arrived at that average, however, with individual game scores all over the map. It was not unusual for me to have a series of 135, 220, 185. Consistency was NOT my strong point - but it did win me quite a few high handicap game pots.
