You like the show, but hate the lead

While I think “hate” is too strong of a word in both my examples …

I liked Malcolm in the Middle, but wasn’t particularly fond of Frankie Muniz. I also liked watching Fear Factor, even though the host, Joe Rogan, got on my nerves.

As for Brooklyn 99, I wasn’t going to watch it when I first saw it was an Andy Samberg show but I tuned in and it’s one of my favorites. He is great in the role and the supporting cast is top notch!

I wasn’t going to watch Full Frontal with Samantha Bee because I didn’t care for her on The Daily Show but I gave it a shot and it turns out her show is absolutely amazing!

2 1/2 Men anyone? Proof that anyone can star in a TV show with the right supporting cast.

[QUOTE]

I just watched a couple of episodes of 2 1/2 Men yesterday. The first time in years and I was surprised at how funny Sheen is on the show. The show would be nothing without him.

And I did watch when Kutcher took over and the show totally sucked with him instead of Sheen.

I liked Grey’s Anatomy but didn’t like Meredith.

This the first show that came to mind.

The show doesn’t exactly have a single lead but Tricia Helfer (Number Six) in Battlestar Galactica. She performed well as an actress, but her characters are overused and often more annoying than anything. I guess the writers felt obligated to give her lots of screen time because she’s very attractive and the main figure in a lot of promotional media. But it’s often well in excess of what the plot demands IMHO. Easily one of the show’s weakest points.

So is the lead actor or the lead character the problem? I have no problem with Lauren Graham but really didn’t care for Lorelai Gilmore - I watched the show for most everyone else.

I’ll risk being labeled a blasphemer and say I wasn’t a big fan of the Buffy character on BTVS - Hannigan’s Willow was my favorite. But SMG was a great actress, and I still can’t believe nothing else she’s done has caught on.

Doctor Who probably needs its own category entirely, which it can share with James Bond.

I like The Office, but don’t really like Michael Scott.

Though I’m about one season behind, I like Gotham despite the sorely miscast Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon. How he got that role I’ll never know.

As actors most of them weren’t great except Laurie Mercalf and John Goodman. Rosanne did get better as an actor as it went along but was never great. I can’t stand her and never liked her stand up but the show was great and as the character she worked well in it.
