What, no love for This Hour has 22 Minutes?
The CBC Evening News is funnier than the Trailer Park Boys.
The first few seasons were good. Now…not so much. Rick Mercer leaving was the beginning of the end. Sean Majumder and Colin Machrie joining the cast was the final death knell. (I think Majumder and Machrie are very funny, in the right setting. This Hour is not it.)
Corner Gas is nothing compared to Rick Mercer’s Made in Canada. Made in Canada is like Dr. Strangelove, but more Machiavellian. I wish they would release the rest of the seasons on DVD.
I can not tell you how much I appreciate Queen Feather of Lou for pointing this out to me. I get to watch ‘home’ a little bit now.
It turns out that we DO get WGN, it was a new addition to our cable lineup.
I keep telling people that if they want to know what it’s like where I’m from, to watch Corner Gas. I really grew up in a town like that, a piddly-ass prairie town, only we had mountains in the distance. And yesterday on the CBC on Sirius I heard that Brent’s hometown is that of an ex-boyfriend. I wonder if it’s that Brent who Dean was talking about.
OMG, that whole episode absolutely killed me! By the time they got to “crack hoe”, I had to pause it because I couldn’t stop laughing!
All in all, I really like the show. It has its ups and downs, but enough ups to keep me recording it. Old Man Oscar is an absolute hoot, and his wife is even funnier. And I loved Kevin McDonald as the taxman…sorry, a taxman…in the first episode.
Good stuff. Now I want to see Trailer Park Boys !
Oooh, I like that! Maybe it’s time for a name change.
Canadian chauvinism? Bah! We watch American sitcoms all the time - we know funny when we see it. Americans might not get some of the subtleties (like calling hoodies bunnyhugs, or the fact that Oscar wears his ballcap tilted to one side like every farmer in Canada, or the guest cameos like the premier of Saskatchewan and Lloyd Robertson), but funny is funny.
I think it’s boring and cliched. So it’s more than slight.
Of course, please do not take this to mean that I think it’s as boring as Robson Arms. Lordy lordy, nothing could be THAT awful.
There are some seasons on DVD? This I did not know! Oh, how I loved that show.
“Really? That much for wood?”
WGN is available everywhere everywhere in the US AFAICT.
I just watched a few clips of Corner Gas on YouTube and I can’t say I’m impressed.
You can’t go by clips. Sit down and watch a couple of episodes. It grows on you.
ShadiRoxan had a DVD of Season One sent to her by an internet friend in Alberta.
“Kiss me Fish Man!”
Count me as an American fan.
I live about 60 miles from the border, and the only TV stations we can pick up are from Vancouver and Victoria, B.C.
So, along with Canadian news and Tim Horton commercials, we get to watch “Corner Gas,” which honestly, is as good as anything coming out of the American networks. Cross “NewsRadio” with “Northern Exposure,” and you might get an idea.
“Well, first Chargex changed its name to Visa, and then I was born…”
