I need some titles of current songs to purchase from iTunes. These are to be used for my dance and aerobics classes, so they need to be high BPMs, say 132 and above.
I truly hate rap and Lilith Fair type stuff (girls with underarm hair music). But club, hip-hop (again NOT rap), dance, pop etc is great.
What are your absolute favorites on your playlists when you really need a high speed (re:BPM) cardio workout song?
Moby has some dance stuff that’s really good. I’ve just bought his movie-music compilation, I Like To Score, and only listened to it a couple of times, but the James Bond theme and Oil 1 from it are both very fast, great dance tunes. I’ve been using them to wear myself out in the evening.
Heh. I like secret-agent type music.
Adding: also from I Like To Score, Go and Ah-Ah are fast, great to move to, but are more monotonous than the others.
Right now, the two bands in heaviest rotation on my workout playlist are The Pipettes and Gogol Bordello.
The Pipettes are high-energy Britpop band that draws on the great girl groups of the 60’s. Think Martha and the Vandellas or the Shirelles with a modern twist. (One of my favorites by them is “One Night Stand.”) I can’t hear them without smiling.
Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from New York. They incorporate violin and accordion along with traditional rock instruments. Very lively, but much fiercer than the Pipettes. Someone described Gogol Bordello as “The Clash and The Pogues having a fight in Eastern Europe.”
If you’re not too easily offended with sexual stuff, Mindless Self Indulgence has some great (and funny) stuff. Placebo, Blue October, Royal Crown Revue, and of course The Pogues top my favourites as well. For a workout, though, I absolutely recommend MSI – seriously, they’re funny as hell if you’re not easily offended and good workoutable music.
Here’s an appropriate one - “Lose My Breath” by Destiny’s Child.
Let’s see, what else have I got that’s fast and (kind of) current?
“Dance Dance” by Fallout Boy
“Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand
“Creepin Up The Backstairs” and “Flathead” by The Fratellis
“Talk to Me, Dance With Me” by Hot Hot Heat
“Sexy Back” by Justin Timberlake
“Out of My Head” by Mobile
“No Hay Igual” by Nelly Furtado
“Pon de Replay” by Rihanna
“Juicebox” and “Last Night” by The Strokes
Some older fast classics - “Synchronicity I” by The Police
“Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “Loaded” by Ricky Martin
“Jumpin Jumpin” by Destiny’s Child
No, I’M not offended, but I have my students to consider. Some would love it, but I remember being shocked by some young female students who were shocked by Trace Adkins’ (I think that’s the right artist, I’m not up much on new country either) video of “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”. They thought it was really bad. When I finally got around to seeing it, I couldn’t see what they were shocked at. But then, I’ve seen so much of the rapstars videos, everything else is tame in comparison.
But I’ve discovered that iTunes, and other online music sales sites like it, have “clean” versions and “explicit” versions of most of the popular songs. So that’s not a problem, I can just buy the clean versions!
I really loved the happy hardcore video and music, but iTunes only had one listing for Happy Hardcore and there was no sample play for it, is there someplace else you buy their stuff?
Happy Hardcore is a style of dance music, not an artist. See the Wikiped page. They provide a list of artists there you can look up. I can recommend the Happy2bHardcore series of CDs that are (I think) pretty widely available (Amazon, BestBuy, etc).
I have to second Litoris’ Mindless Self Indulgent rec - I’ve found “Molly” and “Kill The Rock” to both be great workout songs - and featherlou’s Fallout Boy rec too, since that song is also one I’ve found works well.

Here’s a workout mix I like, pretty fast and dance-y (a little heavy on the 80s, maybe).
Pink - Get the Party Started
Metro Station – Shake It
We the Kings – Check Yes Juliet
All Time Low – Dear Maria, Count Me In
Grease - Better Shape Up
Vickie Sue Robinson - Turn the Beat Around
SoundMaster T- Too Much Booty in the Pants (I love this song to work out to)
Lacuna Coil - Closer
Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero
Escape Club - Wild Wild West
Michael Sembello - Maniac
Cheeky Girls - The Cheeky Song - just hilarious - but not sure if it’s okay for class (the lyrics say something like “youre a cheeky boy, touch my bum”)
Pretty Poison - Catch Me I’m Falling
Culture Club - I’ll Tumble For Ya
Shakira - Hips Don’t Lie (Wherever, whenever is also good)
Plastilina Mosh - Nino Bomba
Tom Jones - Sex Bomb (Peppermint Jam remix, very fast, but it says “sex bomb” over and over, not sure if it’s appropriate)
Bony M - Rasputin (relatively obscure 70s disco band, my parents had the 8 Track when I was a kid, so there is huge nostalgia factor. Definitely a good, fast workout song)
W-O-R-K - Bow Wow Wow in the USA
Miquel Brown - So Many Men
Good Charlotte - I don’t Want to be in Love (really good running song)
Irene Cara - Fame
The TeddyBears - Cobrastyle
Expose - Point of No Return
CrushCrushCrush - Paramore

Will.i.am - I Got It From My Mamma
Expose - Come Go With Me
2 In A Room - Wiggle It
Sheila E - Glamorous Life
Stronger - Kanye West
Remember the Name - Fort Minor
I’m sure the folks at iTunes are loving you guys! I spent a few hours at the iTunes store buying several of these suggestions. And I’m loving the exposure to new and semi-new music!
Hick Chick. Combines country and rap… gotta love it. Other good ones by Cowboy Troy are Lock Me Up, I Play Chicken With the Train, My Last Yeehaw, Do Your Thang, Beast on the Mic, and Buffalo Stampede
Jalapeno. Other good Big And Rich are Soul Shaker, Caught Up in the Moment, Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy, and Love Train.
All Jacked Up. Other good Gretchen Wilson are California Girls, Rebel Child, Redneck Woman, Homewrecker, Chariot, Pocahontas Proud, You Don’t Have to go Home, and There Goes the Neighborhood.
Boney M is obscure? I did not know that, since every dance I go to they still play “Rasputin” and every Christmas I hear their Christmas album everywhere. “Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day… Oh my lord, you sent your son to save us…”
