I completely agree. The same happened for me. I love my cats but their importance in my life was superseded by the arrival of my kids.
My older cat is the best pet I have ever had. A friendly little fur-ball who actually comes when I call her and will ride on my shoulder.
She means a lot to me and I would do a lot to save her, but if I could only rescue one of my kids or my cat there is not even a possibility.
Though I am probably dumb enough to go back into a burning house to make the attempt to rescue her after my wife and kids are safe.
