Your boss has been fired! and Offices closing! spam

Today my Suspect Email folder received over a dozen spams with titles like Your boss has been fired! and Offices closing permanently!

I’m registered on a couple of job boards, but use a more professional-sounding email address for those. I rarely get spam at that address. So what’s the deal with these recent spams?

Sounds like a better-than-usual attempt to get you to read it. No idea what the contents are, but it could be anything (or just an attempt to elicit a response).

Didn’t work.

For you, certainly, but you can bet someone somewhere isn’t so switched-on.

Re: HOWARD EHRLICH Please do not come to work today

I’ve noticed that HOWARD EHRLICH is in a lot of the titles of spam my SEM folder receives.

I got 6 of those this morning.

Think maybe it has something to do with the recent spate of corporate-layoffs-by-E-Mail? Sounds absolutely stupid if you ask me – especially if it is addressed to one specific person that several billion people are not. Even the generic ones – WTF? How does anyone know who the hell your boss is or even what company you work for in the first place? Sounds utterly pointless to me.

My spam filter displays the first few text lines of filtered mail, and the couple I saw were about supposed opportunities to run your own business and/or work from home.

But like everybody else, in much of spam I see the subject line has little or nothing to do with the content.

Most of my recent spam has been addressed to Gary Bessman. Some spam has words in the subject line that make me think they’ve been watching me. One was “Trashing Historian”, which is a book I hated.

No, damn my boss hasn’t been fired.
