Your Comfort Movies

Persuasion – the only decidedly non-Hollywood-yet-still-theatre-released Jane Austen adaptation of recent years. It’s got angst/regret for me to relate to…and a lovely ending to cheer me.

I’ll see elfkin477’s The Professional and change that to the version entitled Leon, which has about 20 extra minutes of footage, IIRC.

The Bear

Rushmore

The Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost episodes

Yep. That’s the one I forgot! It reminds me a lot of Harold & Maude (the soundtrack, the cinematography), which is another good flick, although I have to be in the mood for it…

Both Rushmore and Harald & Maude are great movies.

The soundtrack to Rushmore are great pick-me-up tunes.

Diner alway gives me a warm feeling. It’s like hanging out with pals. And what a great all-star ensemble cast before any of them were stars.

The scene with Steve Guttenburg and Timothy Daly in the strip club always puts a smile on my face.

And Daly’s line when he’s in jail - “I’ll hit you so hard I’ll kill your whole family!” - is a classic.

Lots of mine, I’m happy to see, are already mentioned (like Rushmore, The Big Lebowski, Office Space, [B[Ghostbusters**), but here goes with some more.
I tend to like action movies when I’m either hung over or a little down, so on my list are:
Lethal Weapon
Die Hard and Die Hard With a Vengeance
Army of Darkness
Backdraft
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Then the comedies:
South Park(the movie)
Orgazmo
Summer School

I’ll second The Princess Bride, and also add:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Muppet Movie

Dances with Wolves

The Power of One

My top two have been mentioned: Singin’ in the Rain and Joe Vs. The Volcano.

But I’ll add…

Camelot (because they always used to play it on Thanksgiving back when I was a kid, and there was nothing else to do, and I know it’s a crappy movie, but hey…)

The Matrix (because I know it so well, and because sometimes, you just gotta see things blow up real pretty.)

Real Genius (because smart people are cool.)

**Casablanca

Singin’ In The Rain

Aliens**

Go figure about the last one, but I watch those first two at least once a month on average.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Nobody can whip a rabbit out of their ass like Kirk does.

American Beauty. When I need to be reminded of the important things in life, this movie does it for me.

Ronin. Out-gunned, and alone, this movie shows that you can still do what needs to be done.

Listed in approximate order, favorite first…

Legend - US version with the Tangerine Dream score. I’ve seen this version so often that the finally released Directors Cut almost seems wrong somehow. Technically better, just not what I remember from my youth.

**The Hitcher

Near Dark

The Joy Luck Club

Empire of the Sun** - IMHO Spielberg’s best movie

Modern Problems - I’m a big Chevy Chase fan for some reason.

Summer Lovers - this movie alone made me want to take a cruise of the Greek isles someday

**Bladerunner

The Breakfast Club**

There’s more I’m sure…

Oops, forgot a big one…

This one should be second on my list.
The Thing (John Carpenter remake) - The gore doesn’t get me so much. It’s the only movie I know of where every single character dies in the end. It’s comforting somehow…

What, no Time Bandits listing? Horseflesh*, I’m surprised at you!

*One of the characters in Time Bandits is called Horseflesh.

Horseflesh - Empire of the Sun is the only Spielberg movie that ever makes my list of favourites. I loved the ‘I learnt a new word today - atom bomb’, and the song at the end when his parents didn’t recognise him. What pathos.

Yes! This movie rocks. I love it.

My two choices are
A Hard Day’s Night and Help!. I don’t think anybody can be depressed or blue when watching these movies, they have everything! Cute Beatles, good songs, great comedy. Two of the best movies every made, IMO.

The Last Unicorn–“Because I be what I be, and no cat anywhere ever gave anyone a straight answer, arrrrhh.”

The Dark Crystal–Sometimes even the wisest screw up, but a little guts goes a long way toward fixing it.

Tron–On my good days, I have an attitude much like Flynn’s. On my bad days, I borrow his.

Raiders of the Lost Ark–It’s just fun.

The Muppet Christmas Carol–What could be more uplifting than “Light the lamp, not the rat! Light the lamp, not the rat!

The Princess Bride–No matter how bad things are, they could be worse. You could be “mostly dead”.

It probably says something about me that my comfort movies have as many (or more) animated or puppet characters than real actors.

Tuckerfan-
Yeah, you got me. Technically, there is no Horseflesh in the movie. He is mentioned once: Wally- “Horseflesh wouldnt’ve gotten us into this mess!”; Randall- “Horseflesh is DEAD!”. He is also listed in the ending credits for some reason. It wasn’t until I got the Criterion DVD release with the director’s commentary that I learned the whole reason behind this. What other famous story has seven dwarves (little people) in it? Gilliam didn’t want people to make that kind of connection so he chopped the original leader from the group, making them six. This is such an obscure reference that most Gilliam/Python fans don’t get it. Congrats.

Queen Al -
There are so many awesome and gut-wrenching scenes in that movie. My favorite is when he breaks down and confesses to someone (the doctor?) “I can’t remember what my parents look like.” Gets me every time.

Okay, some of my faves have already been mentioned (The Princess Bride and Harold and Maude, so I’ll put my vote in for

Wayne’s World. It doesn’t seem like much of a “comfort” movie, but it was the first movie that was my very own, and I’ve seen it more than any other movie, so whenever I watch it, it makes me feel so happy. Also, Mary Poppins–best musical ever. Ah, my childhood is flooding back… I love to laugh, loud and long clear…

Horseflesh your namesake is in the movie, IIRC. He shows up at the end when The Supreme Being[sup]TM[/sup] appears to claim His[sup]TM[/sup] map He[sup]TM[/sup] brings Horseflesh with Him[sup]TM[/sup], and all the others are surprised to see that Horseflesh is alive.

Fantasia 2000. Not the whole movie, just the Rhapsody in Blue segment. And in particular, the scene where the hen-pecked husband starts dancing with the organ-grinder’s monkey. For some reason, that scene makes me so happy that I usually even start tearing up. I’ve seen it probably hundreds of times and it still gets me every damn time.

Others for me would be The Big Lebowski, Pom Poko, and Yojimbo, although they rarely drive me to tears.

Ghost World
