Your Comfort Movies

I don’t want to hijack this thread any further, Tuckerfan, but I believe you’re misremembering. That’s Fidgit that the Supreme Being lifts the pillar off of and resurrects: Supreme Being- “No use for laying down on the job.”; Wally- “I’m sorry I killed you Fidgit.” From IMDB Alternate Versions for Time Bandits:

It does mention that there are six minutes chopped from the US release, but until some kind European mails me their version, or I find the Supreme Being’s map again, we’ll just have to wait and wonder.
“Here’s to stinkin’ rich!”

“‘People’?! I ain’t ‘people’! I am…‘a shining star in the Hollywood firma-mint.’. It says so. Right there.”

Damn you, Chuck I wanted to be the first one to mention this one!

I’ve never heard of this one. I’m gonna go out and get it this weekend, based on your recommendation, though!

Some additions of my own:
Kiki’s Delivery Service: The sheer joy of the flight scenes and the beauty of Miyazaki’s world…

The Court Jester

What’s Up, Doc?

The Emperor’s New Groove

Fenris

Oops: two more

Twice Upon a Time

The Wizard of Speed and Time

Both for sheer, exuberant fun!

The Scarlet Pimpernel (Jane Seymour version) - swordfights, costumes, & damn handsome men.

LA Story very quirky and upbeat.

Young Einstein very VERY quirky and upbeat. (And highly historically accurate. Who knew Albert Einstein was from Tasmania?)

When Harry Met Sally upbeat and quirky.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, best movie ever.
Die Hard, best action movie.
Planes Trains and Automobiles, reminds me of some of the adventures that I’ve had while traveling. Especially right after High School.

Ooh, Fenris, Twice Upon A Time. Now there’s something I wouldn’t mind getting on tape or DVD. Too bad its not available in any format. I try to catch it on cable whenever I can.

Errr, I stand corrected. Amazon.com has it for sale. When did that happen? I’ve looked for it for so long I finally gave up. I see IMDB sez the VHS version has some language edited out. Oh well, off to Amazon. ::thumbing credit card::

I almost forgot to of my favorite movies that are always excellent choices when I’m housebound for whatever reason:

Lawrence of Arabia

Dr. Zhivago

LA Story. I agree with Octavia. This and Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid are Steve Martin’s best works, but this is a movie I need to see every once in a while.

Free Enterprise. The story of a couple of Trekkies who are approaching thirty and realize that they need to settle down and gasp get a life. William Shatner plays (more or less) himself, having met the guys one night and pitching his latest project (they’re in The Industry): a musical version of Julius Caeser. The whole film is loaded with more sci-fi and movie references than you shake a tribble at. An undiscovered gem.

The Big Chill. I first saw this when I was in college, and for years I would drag out my tape of it when I was bored and depressed.

Star Trek: Insurrection. I know, not the greatest movie the TNG cast has done, but it’s bright, cheery, lots of good laughs, and for once, the fate of the universe is not at stake. I usually play it at least once a month.

That’s all for now.

Yes! That movie had me rolling. Shatner is great in it, especially at the party at the end.
I guess my post before got et, but I caught one of my comfort favorites last night: Wonder Boys.

I’ll see your Tron and raise you a WarGames. Not quite as much “gee-whiz” special effects, but just as much 80’s nostalgia. Such a kids’ movie…

Another vote each for Wayne’s World and The Iron Giant, and I’ll raise you all (for its sheer fun and energy and getting pumped up value) Mortal Kombat.
(Oh, and Miss Teerious, I was going to email you to challenge you to a Wayne’s World super-geek trivia showdown, but your email address seems to bounce :frowning: )

The first ones that come to mind are:

**Young Frankenstein

Dogma

Grosse Pointe Blank**

Turn off the lights, grab the blanket, get on the couch -
CASABLANCA.

In the old pre-video days, they used to show WIZARD OF OZ every year around Thanksgiving…that is still fun to look at on a cold winter afternoon - with a pillow, on the floor, on your stomach.

But if you are really sick at home, and not just phoning in for a day off…forget films. Nothing heals better than the psychological comfort food of simply watching I LOVE LUCY.

God Said “Ha!”. I know most people don’t get this but when you’ve lost 2 siblings to cancer and you’re missing them, it helps a lot. (And “downwinders” like the Sweeneys as well.)

Altered States and Chariots of Fire when I need to get in a certain mental state.

Chasing Amy for “obvious reasons”. (That leaves one Kevin Smith film left unnamed in this thread, right?)

And South Park, Bigger, Longer and Uncut for silly times.

Two. The one that has never been released on video/DVD, and the latest one.

Wait! I’m wrong, it finally has been put out on DVD! Now I can finally see it. http://us.imdb.com/Details?0116138

Groundhog Day.

Heck ya!

Charlies Angels for goofy fun.

The Matrix for stress relieving explosions.

:stuck_out_tongue:

SolGrundy, you are cool. Fantasia 2000 is a great film, and I cry every time with the excellent art and story that goes along with Rhapsody. I’m a big fan of NYC, so this really hits me. That and the last one, amazing.

Also, I see a lot of good 'ol '80s flicks here. While y’all are talking about Time Bandits, does anyone remember a dreadful-yet-hilarious film called Ice Pirates?

As for my own comfort films – well, usually anything Muppets. We have a huge collection of both films and episodes, and I like ot watch the episodes when I’m bored and alone as a pick-me-up.

Old time fave: Wizard of Oz.

New time fave: (I may get smacked for this) Jossie and the Pussycats. Man is that movie goofy fun!

Evil Dead 2

Army of Darkness

Dirty Work

Grosse Pointe Blank
