Your daily commute

3 miles, 7 minutes. If I’m in a rush, I can get out of bed and be at work all in the space of half an hour.

I talked to my cousin in Florida last night. His wife drives 80 miles each way every day, and it takes her about an hour each way.

14.5 miles each way, from the North Bronx to Mid 20’s Manhattan

1 hour 15 at least each way by subway and bus. More if it’s raining or those horrid Yankee fans are on the train enroute to a game (yes, that’s your elbow in my face, no it’s not funny, and leave the effin brake alone)

25.3 miles one way, and $2.25 in tolls. I come home a different way with no tolls, but it’s about the same mileage.

About 30 minutes in to work, and 50 minutes to get home. (I go in very early.)

55 miles each way, all rural roads, not much traffic other than manure spreaders, deer, wild turkeys, sandhill cranes, geese, and turtles. I drive over marsh, kettles, drumlins, moraines, eskers, and dunes. I encounter 1 stoplight, a mile from work.

When roads are too icy/snowy, I take an alternate route that’s better plowed, but is 2 miles longer, & forces me to go through an actual town!

I used to travel 45 miles each way, via an expressway. I love my current commute so much more.

Look for an apartment manager job. No special skills needed and you get a free place to live, plus salary if it’s a big building, and no commute at all.

Four miles one way, for me. I wish I could ride my bike, but there aren’t really any bike lanes (and the hilly, twisty road I live on would be terrifying).

I don’t think I could handle driving the commutes some of you guys have. One of my coworkers drives about 2.5 hours each way- that’d drive (heh) me insane.

About 2 miles of rural roads, 2 miles of small town, and 10 miles of rural 2-lane highway. 20 min tops.

I get out of bed and walk to my office down the hall. I can’t compete.

Mine is almost exactly 3 miles each way.

I have a friend that does short-haul tractor-trailer runs. He drives about 1 hour and 20 minutes to work at 9:30pm, then makes a run to one of 4 cities (one of this is the city he lives in), then once back at the depot drives 1 hour 20 min home at about 8:00am. He wastes almost 3 hours a day commuting.

A measly 3 miles but I walk every day; it takes about an hour each way.

I walk through the projects about three-quarters of a mile. I smell lots of weed…at 7:30 a.m.

7.8 miles, which takes about 23 minutes each way. That’s a bit over 20 mph with 90% of it on US Route 9.

Only two days a week and short-term, but:

1 hr. 15 min. each way: 12 miles each way.

Yes, this is Los Angeles, and a particularly unfortunate combination of time and direction (across Hollywood > Westwood). Bicycling is faster than driving, but the trek home is simply too dangerous.

My normal job is about an hour door-to-door, but over a longer distance and half of it on a train.

9.5 miles. Google claims it’s 19 minutes. That’s about right if there’s no traffic. It’s taken over an hour to get home some days.

That’s why I go to happy hour at the bar. Get a few drinks, talk to some friends, and still get home at the same time.

About 10 blocks. It used to be farther (about a 10 minute drive), but then we had to move offices and one of the reasons this one was chosen was because a lot of us employees live in the area too.

Not me, but a friend of mine. Her commute is worse than yours or probably anyone else’s here.

She drives 20 minutes each morning from her home in rural Pennsylvania to catch a bus into New York City. The bus leaves at 4:40 AM and she arrives in NYC shortly after 7AM. Then it’s a 20 minute subway ride and 5 minute walk to her office downtown.

She starts between 7:30 and 8 and gets off work at 4.

Her bus home leaves at 4:30 PM and she will get home at around 8PM depending on traffic.

Then she will get up the next morning and do it all again. 5 days a week and she’s been doing this for years.

CBS actually profiled her bus for an “Extreme Commuting” story but the person they choose to follow had a total commute that was much shorter than hers, the person profiled got on the bus 30 minutes later and did not have the car trip to the bus stop…but I guess she was more photogenic.

Why does she do that?

Cycle 5 miles (25 mins, 20 at a push)

Train 35 miles (40 mins)

Cycle 4 miles (20 mins).

Total 1 hour 25 mins x 2 times a day x 4 days a week.

But it keeps me fit, and it’s quicker than going by either car/train or car alone.
