What is your favorite movie scene that takes place in New York City. I’m going there in amonth and thought it would be cool to tour the city based on movie scenes. I know there are millions, I just can’t think of many. I’ll start.
Splash: Ice skating in Rockefeller Center.
(actually it would be scenes from Ghostbusters, but I don’t know enough about NYC to figure out where they took place)
I really love some of the scenes from Ghostbusters as well, including where Venkman is skipping around happily and the fountain bursts on to the music.
Of course, you can’t go wrong with Woody Allen’s many visual love letters to New York City, especially the gorgeous establishing shots at the beginning of Manhattan, set to “Rhapsody In Blue.”
Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in her long black dress – having a Danish and a cup of coffee early in the morning while she gazes in the windows of Tiffany & Co.
Just about all of Taxi Driver is a great New York City scene, especially where Travis Bickle is spewing his sociopathic monologue to the presidential candidate in the back of his cab. Also, in one of the voice-over montages, a fellow is pulled out of his car and beaten on the sidewalk in broad daylight. That’s so out-of-control, it’s funny.
Pardon my lateness to the Taxi Driver party. My own fave happens at Columbus Circle when Travis approaches the secret service and strikes up a conversation. My hometown of Fair Lawn, NJ is claimed as Travis’ place of residence.
The final scene of Gremlins 2, with their rendition of “New York, New York” and a bit of Rhapsody in Blue. “Dining After Midnight in New York” … heheh.
ON THE TOWN, while a movie pretty inferior to the stage musical, has some great scenes in the first sequence, although most of it was filmed in Hollywood.
ANNIE HALL also has some love-NY scenes. Go to the 57th St. and Sutton Place park over the East River to look at the 59th St. Bridge, and you’ll also get some Simon & Garfunkel cred.
