Best "New York Movie"?

Just moved back to NYC after a break of several years. To kick off my return to the Big Apple, I’m renting myself all the greats made in/about New York City. What are some of your favorites?

I’m putting “Taxi Driver” on the top of my personal list. You have to root for the mohawked Travis Bickle at the same time you’d be scared to death to meet him in a dark alley.

Taxi Driver would have been mine aswell.

I love W. Allens Manhatten exp. the opening.

Oh and welcome to The Straight Dope

42nd Street, Sweet Smell of Success, The Best of Everything—three of my favorites.

Oh, and not to forget the brief but enlightening What Happened on 23rd Street.

After Hours is an overlooked classic.

On the Town, which is famous for “The Bronx is up/the Battery’s down/the people ride/in a hole in the ground.”

“Mean Streets” is a fave of mine, expect I think most of it was, although set in New York, actually filmed in Los Angeles.

The Warriors.

The Taking of Pelham 123.

Escape from New York.

Ghostbusters.

Meteor.

Jesus Kallip, you shoulda stayed away!

L.A. Story.

heh heh. Nothing like comedy. But seriously, King of New York. Christopher Walken gangster flick. Badass.

DaLovin’ Dj

Do The Right Thing and The French Connection. Best New York movies ever.

I always thought that When Harry met Sally showcases the city well.

And I think Woody Allen set one of his movies there where it was used as prominant backdrop… hmmm. I could be mistaken on that one.

Sleepers features Hell’s Kitchen prominently.

Brighton Beach Memoirs is another favorite.

“New York Stories” 3 New York films for the price of one.

Dream Team!

“I love New York! Bring your kids; have 'em arrested!”

Midnight Cowboy

Is it against message board etiquette to post even though someone has already posted what you were going to?

Anyway, Manhattan, After Hours and When Harry Met Sally would be good choices.

I’m a big fan of “Quick Change” starring Bill Murray, Geena Davis, and Randy Quaid. It’s silly, and mainly a movie to watch if you’ve got a bit of a grudge against NYC, but I’m a fan.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s and An Affair to Remember get my nods for being the best New York movies when it was clearly the most important and glamorous city in the world, say from 1950 - 1965.

Mrs JohnT looked at the title and immediately piped in what she calls "the Three ‘B’s’ ": Manhattan (Woody Allen), Metropolitan (Whit Stillman), and Moonstruck (Norman Jewison).

Duh. That should be “Three M’s”. God, don’t you hate it when you screw the pun? :frowning:

1)“After Hours”- Hilarious
2) “Taxi Driver”- Excellent acting from Robert Denero (sp?)
3) “Die Hard 3”- Classic::wink:
