Your Favorite "Angry Humor"

Joan Rivers could angry rant with the best of 'em.

Since the best ones like Burr and Carlin have been. Mentioned, Doug Stanhope has some good anger routines.

I agree. I think he was aable to use his standup as a sort of therapy to get it out of his system. He hated yuppies.

Find the Bill Burr rant against the Philly audience on YouTube.

This Carlin concert is as relevant today as it was in the 80s. Corrupt politicians, the police, rage. Thank you for this thread.

If you like Rip Torn, check out his turn as crooked concert promoter Dino McLeish in Songwriter.

Blackie Buck: I underestimated you, Dino.

Dino McLeish: All you sombitches do.

Yeah, it was the New Jersey show that really marked the beginning of angry-cultural-critic stuff that pretty much became his routine for the rest of his life.

Jon Stewart on the Daily Show. Plenty of anger and frustration.
John Oliver. Dude can get worked up.
Stephen Colbert as the angry Republican on the Colbert Report. The veneer was very thin.

That was a very good one. I saw it years ago, with the bad graphics and all.
Speaking of Bill’s, “Bill vs. The Heckler” is pretty good, but he has more funny stuff later on in the show. There’s another audio show where he’s asking the audience questions, what they do career-wise, and it becomes quite funny. I also remember him mocking Hulk Hogan, and then Bill genuinely screaming “Is everything just money with you people?”

Hicks.

Yep, Bill Burr too. My husband and I have watched all of his Netflix specials. They’ve all been good except for one of them. There was some really funny stuff, but then it also really dragged in parts. I listen to his podcast sometimes while I’m walking the dogs. I couldn’t care less about the sports aspect of it, but he makes me laugh out loud.

I (and many other fans, according to the YouTube comments) have no idea of many of the sports he refers to. Even now with no sports, he’ll revert back to games from 20 years ago…

Still the funniest podcast, although, I can’t think of any others.

Which Bill?

FWIW, I’ve worked with Lewis Black. He is indeed a very nice guy, and pretty even-keeled most of the time. But that doesn’t mean the anger in his act is not genuine. Like all of us, there are things that make him angry. (And there’s plenty to choose from these days.) He takes that anger, exaggerates it, and uses it to make his points and to get laughs. But it’s coming from a very real place, and I think that’s what makes his material work.

For another example of “angry comedy,” John Belushi deserves a mention. He did the escalating anger bit as well as anybody.

C’mon! Dennis Fuckin’ Leary!
