Your favorite charities

I’m a push over for international help organizations, especially those that do small projects to help remote areas.
My new favorite is the Central Asian Institute which ‘promotes literacy, women’s vocational skills, and awareness of public health and environmental issues through community initiated education programs in mountain regions of Central Asia.’

My old favorite is Doctors without Borders a Noble Peace Prize winning organizaiton which ‘delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation.’

What subject or type of charity tugs at your heart- and purse-strings?

The Houston SPCA is my first, best and last charity I donate time and money too. Most charities that I have dealt with in the past deal with broad subjects. The SPCA does things right in the community, and for animals that otherwise would be destroyed.

The Red Cross was very good to my parents during the flood of 96 - so they get some dough every month. Then I give to a local shelter for the homeless. And lastly, I give a big contribution to Toys for Tots at XMas. We grew up poor and XMas was the only time we ever got toys, so it makes me sad to think that there might be children out there not getting any.

The American Red Cross, The New York Public Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art,
The Museum of Natural History,
The Queens Borough Public Library, and
The Brooklyn Public Library.

Um, yeah, so I have a thing for libraries and museums.

The Easter Seal Society. When our son was small he had a speech impediment and it would have been really hard on us financially to take him to a regular speech clinic at that time. A friend told us that the local Easter Seal chapter had a good speech clinic and they only charged based on what you could afford to pay. They were able to correct his speech and we have been regular contributors since.
