Mentioning To Die For in another thread made me think about dark comedies. I really enjoyed that movie, as well as other darkly comic things like Six Feet Under and the highly underrated movie Citizen Ruth, and I’d like to see more movies and shows in that vein. What are your favorite dark comedies?
Well, there’s Dr. Strangelove. And then there are all the rest!
The War of the Roses, mostly because it doesn’t go soft in the end, even when it looks like it might.
Spaced - The British comedy.
It’s not really fair to pick the best one like that, Labdad.
The Ladykillers and Kind Hearts and Coronets, Arsenic and Old Lace… Election is a much more modern example. I guess Network would be a dark comedy.
Heathers
Death to Smoochy- The way Robin Williams tries to get his revenge is an utterly Brilliant scene to me.
Citizen Ruth
Very Bad Things
Bloodlines
Dead Alive
Eating Raul
The King of Comedy
Election
Punch Drunk Love
Happiness
We only saw Kind Hearts and Coronets a few months ago. It’s hilarious.
After Hours
Does Yojimbo count as a dark comedy?
“Something for Everybody” is a VERY funny dark comedy. You will never think of Angela Lansbury in the same way again after you see this film.
I think Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are both pretty dark.
Death Becomes Her is a hoot.
Dead Like Me. I sure wish more than two seasons had been made.
Would The Producers (both versions) be considered a dark comedy or is it too broad?
That’s a mere frippery comapred to Man Bites Dog.
The Ice Harvest I thought was pretty good, but my opinion is not shared by many.
Would Grosse Pointe Blank be considered a dark comedy? Because that one was pretty good too.
Gimme a minute here, I swear I can come up with something that doesn’t involve John Cusack…
