Last night my friends and I were discussing the merits of gas station food. My roommates and I pretty much live off the stuff since the gas station is the closest store to our house, open 24 hours and its cheap too. We all have certain faves we go for again and again. The top few for me are…
1-The microwave burrito. When god rested on the 7th day he probably came up with this delicious dish. Especially good when doused in hot sauce.
2-Hot dogs, right of the “roller grill” or the treadmill, which ever you prefer. 2 for 2 bucks, can’t go wrong there.
3-Various sandwiches, take your pick, they are all pretty much the same meat with different flavors.
I know that there are others out there who appreciate the goodness that is the ever ready gas station delight.
I have to go with the Tijuana Mama family of pickled, dyed, and heavily spiced meat waste sausage products. They are true gas station food and most of them seem to have them despite the fact that I have never seen anyone buy them except for me and this hot girl I worked with in high school.
The Speedway by my office has these chicken salad sandwiches that are just awesomely goopy and bad for you that I love, and AM/PM has BBQ Ribette sandwiches that I fiend for sometimes too.
Oh, and the Citgo by my old apartment had this deal installed where they made pizzas and in the morning they made these little breakfast pizzas with scrambled eggs, sausage, and bacon that were so good they actually made me weep when they took the pizza oven out.
I have one I can’t even justify–AM/PM burgers. Patties that are a weird off-brown color and that have a chewy consistency that doesn’t even quite taste like meat? Check. Huge jugs of mayo and ketchup that either give you squeaks of condiments or big globs? Check. No way to spread your condiment except by hand? Check. Pickle tubs a zillion people have used? Check. Yet any time I go by an AM/PM, I must go in and get some. There’s something about that odd patty consistency that always gets me.
I’m spoiled because the BP in my neighborhood has a full Subway in it, so I go there often for lunch.
But, when I want a quick, tasty, salty, naughty treat I get one of those Slim Jim beef sticks w/ cheese. Nummy!
I just tried the doughnuts from our local Speedway. I am not a regular donught eater but these caught my eye. I bought too and they were totally awesome - at 8 pm, to boot!
QuikTrip is heaven on Earth for me, and is a compelling reason for me to move to the Midwest when I can finally get out of Arizona. It’s a struggle every day not to stop in on the way to work and get a big cup of perfectly-mixed fountain soda, a pastry, and a breakfast sandwich/burrito. Some days, for lunch, I just have to go in and grab a pre-heated burger, a bag of Chex Mix, and of course the afore-mentioned perfect soda. I can’t bear to go into a Circle K or Chevron any more.
The one I can’t get in the US. The piping hot beef and cheese pie. No nutritional value at all but on the way to work on a cold morning there is nothing like it
