Where are you guys getting that there is no Keyser Söze? The busted up hungarian dock worker isn’t in on this.
Yes, I believe he is. First, he clearly figured out that Leo was a mole, and said, “Why didn’t I rat you out?” to him. Second, on the news report, he is identified as a police officer (though the gangsters think that’s a trick, I don’t think they’re correct).
I enjoyed the movie, but I agree both sides are pretty freaking stupid about rooting out moles in their respective organizations. And Matt Damon’s character is unbelievably stupid for renting that apartment, etc., but lucky for him, his stupidity is trumped by the stupidity of the police. I also have to point out that in addition to lots of idiocy, the plot relies on the outrageous coincidence that Matt’s girlfriend would not only meet, but have an affair with Leo, so that she would have a reason for opening the envelope from him behind Matt’s back.
Seems to me that they was one, and that Verbal is it. Somehow someone actually saw Soze, and knew it was Soze. Soze was desperate enough to keep the secret that Soze=AGuyThatLooksLikeKevinSpacey that he was willing to take a huge risk to kill that guy.
Of course, things didn’t go perfectly, and one of the guys on the dock survived after seeing Soze. If he hadn’t seen him, everyone on the boat would have died, and Verbal Kint may or may not have done some time - but from what we’ve seen he probably wouldn’t have.
In the end, of course, Soze traded one Hungarian who knew his face for another Hungarian and the FBI and LAPD.
In the end, not a perfect plan, but he apparently thought it was worth the risk.
