Oh, GAAAAAAWWWD, have I mentioned to you people how incredibly, intensely SICK I am of all these god-awful “list” threads?? Well, I am. Favorite movies, best bands, best songs, best songs about jerking off, your favorite jerk-off sessions, your favorite actresses that you jerk-off to, lists of guys you’d do if you were gay, lists of women you’d do if you were lesbian, lists of people you’d have sex with if you weren’t some pathetic internet-addicted dolt squatting in front of your monitor jerking off to the “Jennifer Love Hewitt Ultimate Fan Page!” STOP IT!!
Why does it irk me so? For one reason, the “best band ever” threads never fail to expose all the Rush/Yes fans on this message board. Who knew that all 4 Rush/Yes aficionados left on the planet earth would congregate at the SDMB? All opinions aside folks but if you consider either of these bands to be one of the “best ever” you need to be taken out to a cold desolate field and beaten with a lead pipe until you either A) die or B) common sense returns.
Oh and how about those “favorite movie” lists? Those really bring out the cosmopolitan tastes. There’s nothing more I want to do than to read the frenzied typings of someone who lists “Magnolia” and “The Truth About Cats and Dogs” as two prime examples of cinematic achievement.
Get stuffed, Philistines. Rush/Yes defenders: kiss my ass and call it ice cream.
Torgo – I agree that the favorite lists don’t accomplish much in the “fighting ignorance” category, but posting to them is a good way for less confident lurkers and newbies to get their feet wet.
And the reading lists? Shoot, I wouldn’t mind seeing a separate forum just for books. Why do posters feel the need to apologize whenever they start a “what are you reading” topic? It’s because someone’s gonna jump on them because it was done before.
Oh, and since this is the Pit, my favorite color is blue and my favorite food is Chinese. What’s yours?
This is high on my “best rant ever” list. I especially liked:
Exquisite. You, sir, are a genius. I give that a 10.5. Although, while I wouldn’t list them among the best ever, Rush and Yes were both quite capable groups. There are worse choices.
In my opinion, one of the reasons that such threads are so common around here is that this board is innervated with people who like to believe, and like to have others believe, that they’re significantly more intelligent and erudite than they actually are. The Internet is a haven for people who don’t like who they really are, so they pretend to be somebody else online. Thus, when they see an opportunity to amaze all of us with their appreciation for the subtleties of fine culture, they seize it. And when they don’t see one, they create it. As if we’re supposed to say “Wow, you made a lame and rather transparent reference to classical music. Surely you can’t be a simple-minded loser who has sqaundered his or her life to this point on the Internet, sharing your life with complete strangers and trying to scrap together some substitute for your failing social life in the real world.”
Do you know what else twists my jewels into a knot? Those “Rant” threads where some complete stranger flys off the handle at a bunch of other complete strangers. I hate that.
They’re all, “Wah, wah, I HATE everthing!” and then the readers of the thread are all like, “Huh - what’s up this guy’s ass?” and then the guy’s like, “Go to hell and on your way down why don’t you pleasure yourself with a rotten eggplant?” and then some woman’s all, “If you don’t like it don’t read it, brainiac.” then the OP guy says, “Blow me, you hag!”.
Let go of your hatred. It’s much easier to control when you give it to someone else.
