All right, say you’re in a thread in Cafe Society or IMHO, and somebody starts a thread along the lines of “List your favorite Thingamabob,” said thingamabob being movie/TV plot device, literary style, eccentric person, whatevah.
About 10 or so posters list their favorite thingamabob. Then some JERKOFF says I can’t believe nobody mentioned XXX!"
OK, aside from the FACT that the planet didn’t stop revolving because said JERKOFF’s favorite thingamabob didn’t get mentioned yet, it could for these reasons…
ONE! It SUCKS.
TWO! It’s FORGETTABLE.
THREE! it’s STUPID.
FOUR! It SWALLOWS 10-YEAR-OLD GOAT SEMEN.
FIVE! NOBODY CARES.
So my advice to said B]JERKOFF**s…GET OVER IT, POST YOUR FAVORITE THINGAMABOB, AND QUIT USING THAT TOTALLY UNNEEDED COMMENT!!!
I agree with clayton_e on this. I don’t share the OP’s cosmic hatred of these posts, but the “My favorites are the coolest things ever!” attitude is a little grating. I’ve been doing my damndest to grow out of this attitude, and it’s frustrating to see it in many Dopers that I consider otherwise mature and cool.
Sometimes, just sometimes, it is incredulous that a thingamabob is not mentioned.
Frinstnce, someone starts a thread about Isaac Asimov and three pages go by with discussions on I, Robot and Caves of Steel. There is a 5 post deconstruction of The Naked Sun plus a heated argument over the real meaning of The Gods Themselves.
Dontcha think an “I can’t believe no one’s mentioned Foundation!” is called for? Even if it isn’t jerkoff’s favorite Asimov it would still be quite incredible that 5 pages have gone by and no one mentioned it.
And, to continue playing devil’s advocate, why can’t jerkoff find it amazing that no one liked the thingamabob he liked? You can be incredulous without being a jerkoff. Saying that you find it amazing that no one like this song does not make you a jerkoff. Calling someone a jerkoff for saying “I can’t believe no one’s mentioned this” is sorta jerkoffish if you ask me. And you didn’t, but I told you anyway.
Man, I just had to tell you that this made me laugh like a fool. I HATE when people do that! [sub]although I think I did it myself…maybe…just once[/sub]
Even worse though is when they admit that they haven’t read the entire thread and then go on to completely repeat something that’s already been said. Or to drag up an old argument that was resolved two pages ago. This is especially vexing in GD and here in the Pit.
A pox on premature posters!
Grrrrrr…
This frequently annoys me too. Not always–sometimes it is actually relevant–but often. Especially like “I can’t believe no one has mentioned [insert song title that I’ve never heard of by band I’ve never heard of]” which to me indicates that it might not be the screamingly obvious inclusion that they think it is.
Also, if the thread says list your favorite movies, books, sex position etc… and I post my favorites, what gives anyone the right to dispute what are my favorites? My personal favorites are a matter of personal opinion and should be treated as such.
Man, what’s wrong with XXX? I mean, the actors were good (But I have a weakness for both Samuel L and Vin Diesel), the plot was decent, etc. I mean, I was entertained! It was a complete reworking of the spy thriller genre! Do you dislike the movie so much that you had to make a whole topic about it?
I can’t believe no one said something like that yet.
I’m going to agree with Biggirl. I posted a comment along the lines of the OP in the thread we’re all talking about referring to an interesting and complex character in one of the most famous and well-regarded science fiction novels in the history of the genre, in a forum reknowned for its high number of SF geeks, and not one of those bastards saw fit to agree with me. I was literally unable to comprehend how this had happened, so I said so.
I apologise for offending your delicate sensibilities, and will continue to do so for the forseeable future.
I can’t believe that nobody said that they can’t believe that most people on this thread have the indecency to say, “I can’t believe that nobody said…” in direct torment to the OPer.
