Actually, I’d go for either Song of Scheherazade(24:39) or Ashes Are Burning(11:20) by Renaissance.
Since I didn’t see any of these posted already, and since they’re some of my favorite long songs:
Maggot Brain - Funkadelic (10:19) - from Maggot Brain
The Gumbo Variations - Frank Zappa (16:56) - from Hot Rats
Up In Her Room - The Seeds (14:39) - from web Of Sound
Marquee Moon - Television (10:40) - from Marquee Moon
Do Your Thing - Isaac Hayes (19:30) - from Shaft (soundtrack)
Many years ago I made a mix CD with just these 5 songs on it. It’s still a great way to spend 72 minutes or so. None were chart toppers but they’re all great songs.
Yes!!!
Ooh, that’s one of my all-time favorite songs and your post is the first time I’ve seen it mentioned on the internet.
I think that this song is a great example of a tune that many people who consider themselves Beatle fans would not recognize by name, but after a few seconds of hearing it, they would know the song as one they enjoy hearing and consider it a Beatle hit.
“Supper’s Ready” by Genesis - 22:54. Not really a “hit”, but a major, major song in the history of Progressive rock.
I have the vinyl. I understand there’s a second side to it, but I’ve never checked.
I think only one or two of these could be considered hits, but I’d rather not limit it to hit songs.
Television- Marquee Moon (10:47)
David Bowie- Station to Station (10:14)
The Pogues- The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (8:14)
New Order- Blue Monday (7:28)
Nico- Chelsea Girls (7:25)
R.E.M.- Leave (7:17)
The Velvet Underground- Heroin (7:12)
New Order- Temptation (7:01)
Curtis Mayfield- Move On Up (8:48)
One that’s just two seconds short:
Sonic Youth- Teen Age Riot (6:58)
Here are some in my MP3 collection:
“Papa Was a Rolling Stone” - Temptations - 11:44
“Time Has Come Today” - The Chambers Brothers - 11:02
“Walk on By” - Issac Hayes - 12:02
“In the Court of the Crimson King” - King Crimson - 9:25
“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” - Bauhaus - 9:34
Tam Lin by Fairport Convention 7:12
Some of these might not quite fall in the jurisdiction of “rock hits”, but to do my best at fitting that:
Kashmir by Led Zeppelin
Willie the Pimp by Frank Zappa/Captain Beefheart
King Kong by Frank Zappa
Tracy by Mogwai
Santi-u by Yoko Kanno
Space Lion by Yoko Kanno
Osorezan by Geinoh Yamashirogumi
Hybrid Rainbow by The Pillows (YouTube video is of an edited, shorter version)
It also has a long title. Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity. 10 minutes and 54 seconds long. {Link to Video, NSFW language.}
Off the “Woodstock” album, there’s “I’m Going Home” (12:02) by Ten Years After, and “Want to Take You Higher/Dance to the Music” (12:28) by Sly and the Family Stone.
Would “Tubular Bells” by Mike Oldfield count? That clocks in at 26:01
Genesis fans would probably consider these “hits” as well:
Watcher of the Skies – 7:23
The Return of the Giant Hogweed – 8:09
The long version of Sweet’s “Love is Like Oxygen” on Live at the Marquee (8:56). The studio version on Level Headed is just under seven minutes at 6:57.
For Crying Out Loud - Meat Loaf (8:45)
Rolling Stones - “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”
Kansas - “Song for America”
Wishbone Ash - “Phoenix”
Little Feat - “Dixie Chicken” (Live version)
And as long as we’re including old Genesis tunes, how about “The Musical Box”?
21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson. Clocks in at 7:26.
The Smashing Pumpkin’s Hummer is 6:57 so bummer it just missed. Buncha great songs mentioned already. I’ll add:
Lou Reed’s Intro/Sweet Jane 7:55,
Rock ‘n’ Roll 10:17 and
Tommy Bolin’s Post Toastee 9:03.
What? I have Machinehead by Deep Purple on iTunes, and it shows 4:34. Is this some other song you’re mentioning?
I’ll add “Lazy” - Deep Purple. Progressive hard rock that rocks and isn’t just noodling, running 7:23.
