Your favorite New Year's memories

Well, dopers, is anyone up for kicking off the new century with a retell of your favorite New Year’s pasts?

Here’s mine:

London, 1998. Getting ready for the party, quietgirl and I kissed for the first time.

The next day we marched in the London New Year’s Parade. We were getting ready. I was in the bell section, and she had just wished me a good parade and was walking to the flutes.

“Hey, Jen.”

She turns.

“I love you.”

I will never forget that smile.

Anyone else?

I agree sweetheart.

Love always,
your Quietgirl

If you can remember New Year’s Eve, you’re not doing it right.

That being said, sweet story, hope you get many more.

The only party I ever attended where I was able to fit into a Size 10 dress. Danced the night away, very thinly. It was pretty bitchen. Lasted about 72 hours.

Perhaps it will happen again someday? Am I crazy to hope?

Osaka, either 1993 or 1994.
My traveling companion had retired early to his capsule. Not wanting to let the new year pass uncelebrated, I took a train to the western side of the city and got off at a random stop at about 11:30. Just before midnight, I ended up walking down one of those great Japanese alleyways to a tiny, beautiful, candlelit Shinto shrine. I stood there, enjoying the cold air for a moment. At midnight exactly, a young couple burst arm in arm from a Karaoke bar. The bar began playing “auld lang syne” and it started to snow.

I have had far better new years before and since, but this is my favorite single memory.

I have a long and terrible history of having boring overrated New Year’s Eves celebrations. We don’t even TRY anymore.

I’ve got a good one where the guy I was dating at the time told me he loved me for the first time, but he’s not the guy I ended up marrying. I recall that as being a very fun evening, from start to finish. It was just that perfect stage in the relationship.

A coupla years ago my BIL wanted to go to the KISS concert with my husband. I told them to go, with my blessing. I stayed home alone and it was really nice, low key, lots of free time, no expectations.

Upon re-reading my post, it seems strangs to me that it was snowing in Osaka. Perhaps I misremembered? Any Kansai dopers out there?

Last year, me, my boyfriend, and four other people all slept over at this one person’s house. We watched movies, talked, drank mixed pina coladas, and generally had fun. After the ball drop thing, we all went outside and lit off fireworks and ran around barefoot in our pajamas. Then when we went back inside, we put on Independence Day, and everyone else fell asleep, and I gave head for the first time ever. It was really great. Too bad the person who threw the party is in Denver now.

It was just last year, he was already your boyfriend, and you hadn’t given head to him yet?

Geez, you youngsters are gettin’ more and more prude and Victorian every year! Why, when I was your age, I’d already been to the Summer of Love. Or at least I wished I had.

Oh – and hopefully, my best New Years memory will be of this night. I’ve just made one HELL of a New Years’ Resolution, and if I achieve it, I won’t forget the night I made said Resolution (i.e. tonight) for a loooooong time…
