I’m having a party this weekend and need to play some quality tunes. Problem is, this party is going to be attended by a wide range of people from all different backgrounds. My grandfather will be there, but so will the 15-year-old kid from down the street. I’m trying to please as many people as possible with the music selection, so I think the best way to go is with classic rock tunes of the “party rock” persuasion (i.e. - Stuff people can dance to).
So, what are your Top 10/20/50? Here are mine (no particular order):
Brown-Eyed Girl, Van Morrison
Satisfaction, The Rolling Stones
You Really Got Me, Van Halen version
Soul Man, Blues Brothers
Tequila, The Champs
I Saw Her Standing There, The Beatles
Jessica, The Allman Brothers
Long Train Runnin’, Doobie Brothers
Authority Song, John Cougar Mellencamp
Gimme Three Steps, Skynyrd
I think I’ll also sprinkle in a few songs that were popular party tunes when I was in college, like:
“Missionary Man” - The Eurythmics
“Headhunter” - Front 242
“Mr. Fool” - Let’s Active
“Mars Needs Women” - Meat Beat Manifesto
“Intergalactic” - Beastie Boys
“Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress” - The Hollies
“Dancing Queen” - Abba
“My Wife and My Dead Wife” - Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians
“Lost Weekend” - Lloyd Cole and The Commotions
“Tragedy” - The Bee Gees
“Cuz it’s Hot” - My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult
“Naive” - KMFDM
“Like a Prayer” - Bigod 20
I have just been inspired to make a compilation CD.
My favorite rock to party on is granite. It’s solid, stable, and has a nice pebbly, non-slip surface. Very attractive colors, too. Much better quality than slate or limestone, and not nearly as ostentatious as marble.
“Song 2” by Blur
“Low” by Cracker
“Born on the Bayou” by CCR
“New Orleans is Sinking” by The Tragically Hip
“So Whatcha Want” by the Beastie Boys
“Jump” by House Of Pain
“Stuck in the Middle with You” by Stealer’s Wheel
“Heterosexual Man” by Odds
“Sweet Emotion” by Aerosmith
“Around the World” by Daft Punk
“Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson
“What Is Love?” by Haddaway
If you want party music for a wide audience, you can’t go wrong with some Buffet (although you probably want to save “Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw” till the old people are gone.
