Another vote here for “Sarek.” No special effects, no flashy techno-bull. Just good, solid acting, and a very poignant and touching story.
Well, heck, I just found out that a WHOLE lot of Star Trek characters died without my ever knowing. Shoulda watched more DS9. And more movies. Silly me.
My favorite moment was when Wesley Crusher got torn limb from limb in that horrible Holodeck accident. The part where he screamed for mercy as his torso was being severed by the huge rotating knives was just so perfect.
What?
Oh. Damn.
The end of the alternate universe episode on TOS, after Kirk pleaded with bearded-Spock to sieze control of the Enterprise and eventually the Empire. Spocks last line, “Captain, I shall consider it!” always stuck with me, just the way he says it is perfect.
For TNG, the episode “The Nth Degree” where Barchly gets super intelligent. When he’s in the holodeck and tells the computer to make something and it says it doesn’t know how he just shurgs and says “Ok, here’s how you build one…”
For DS9 in the episode where Worf goes with the Kinglons on a raid agaisnt the Dominion and brings along Kor, the old Klingon war master. After Kor makes a fool of himself he takes 1 ship and single handedly obliterates the chasing Dominion ships. It shows the scene from the bridge of the ship Worf is on, one of the Klingons says something like “This is impossible, he is only 1 ship against (I forget how many, 6 or something)” and Worf just smiles and says “He is Kor, the Dahar Master!”
Klingons were so much cooler in DS9.
The Tholian Web is my favorite old school episode, because it was so creepy. Tholians were about the only non-anthropoid aliens the Enterprise crew encountered, and didn’t look like guys in rubber suits. Instead of big explosions and destruction, they slowly suffocate their prey to death.
The non-emotional Spock had to act as leader and backbone of morale while everybody was going to pieces around him. McCoy was the rusty hammer picking at Spock’s wall, ostensibly reminding him to his duty as captain, but inadvertantly trying to get him to break and be just as vulnerable as everybody else. The ep also demostrated how much of a calming influence Kirk is to them, even with a remote taped speech.
The first time I saw it I was probably 10, and the sight of Kirk’s reflection in Uhura’s mirror made me squeal. It still gives me goose bumps to see it. When she’s in sick bay across from a screaming Chekov, she asks Dr. McCoy softly, “Will I wind up like Chekov?” It further underscores the desperation of their plight, not only trapped like rats, but losing their minds in the process.
AKAIK no other episode of any of the STs featured the Tholians. Too bad such a great episode only featured the alien flavor of the week.
Original Series - “Errand of Mercy,” when Kirk is arguing with the Organians and realizes that he’s been hotly defending the right to go to war and get a bunch of people killed. Love Spock’s little eyebrow lift, as if to say “You walked right into that one, Captain.”
Movies - TWOK, Spock’s death scene. I still can get misty over this.
TNG - “Inner Light,” when Picard plays the flute at the end. Another misty moment.
DS9 - “Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast”, Bashir tells Garak the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf, and Garak’s response… “Never tell the same lie twice.”
DS9 - “Explorers,” Miles and Julian, drunk off their asses, singing “Jerusalem.” O’Brien nearly telling Bashir he loves him is also dear to my slashy heart.
Have to agree with Spock’s death in Wrath of Khan.
Also, the climactic space battle in Wrath of Khan which is STILL the best space battle on film, despite the rise of much better special effects.
Kirk clenching his fist and saying “Fire!” in the end of Undiscovered Country when they finally get a fix on the Klingon ship.
The episode of TNG where the little alien parasites start taking over Starfleet High Command. In the end, they run out of all the people Picard and Ryker killed to the one Admiral and his neck is bulging and throbbing with them all. He smiles and says to Picard and Ryker “We seek…peaceful coexistence.” Picard and Ryker look at each other for a second then blow the shit out of him.
That’s my favorite moment too, the look on Chang’s face was perfect.
From Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Spock: “Jim. Your name… is Jim.” With the theme music playing softly in the background.
And a second vote for Picard putting his hand up to open the door at the end of Inner Light.
Worf killing Weyoun when he disses Dax.
After Garak kills Weyoun:
Female Founder “That was the last Weyoun clone.”
Garak “I was hoping you’d say that.”
There are FOUR lights!

“Let’s get the hell out of here.”
The perfect denoument to a very heavy story
Before the writers decided that Rom was actually smart, Odo once nabbed Quark when he realized Quark couldn’t have been telling the truth about Rom fixing his replicator. Odo’s rationalization for that is still one of my favorite Star Trek lines: “Rom is in an idiot. He couldn’t fix a straw if it was bent.”
The Doomsday Machine
There is no fourth planet.
Don’t you think I KNOW THAT!
(there should be more McCoy)
The end of the episode when Spock goes through Pon far.
McCoy Admit it! You were on the verge of giving us an emotional performance that would have brought the house down!
Spock I was mearly expressing my quite logical relief that Starfleet had not lost a highly capable captain.
The end of an episode I can’t quite recall. (Journey to Bable?)
McCoy Shusses Kirk and Spock. Well, I finally get the last word.
The Ultimate Computer
Daystrum They were laughing behind my back at the boy genius all the while they were building on my work. BUILDING ON MY WORK!
Shore Leave?
When McCoy reappears with the two space bunnies on his arm and big grin on his face.
Gallieo 7
Severl times in this ep. McCoy jumps on Spocks back but when Scotty figures out why Spock jetisoned the fuel and ignited it. The tone of respect that Scotty has is reall cool.
The episode when Scotty has to drink that alien under the table.
Star Trek III
Jim, your name is Jim.
Transwarp drive in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (sputter)
How many fingers am I holding up?
You wanted excitment? How’s this for exciting?
A lot of good moments mentioned here. I misted up at Kirk’s last scene in Generations, and I don’t even know why. I hate Shatner and I’m not into the original series. [In fact, I wasn’t really even interested in Star Trek when I saw it. I AM a sap for goodbye scenes, but even I have to admit it was done well.]
Just for safety’s sake:
We knew Terry Farrell was leaving the show, but Jadzia’s death was irritatingly pointless and anticlimactic. And the character who replaced her was lame.
When did that happen, Carnivorousplant? I may’ve missed it.
I found the end of Nemesis effective. I didn’t cry or anything, but it worked for me. I was rather taken by the way “Blue Skies” was incorporated into the closing theme, too, I liked that.
Bizarre moment: Chain of Command is indeed intense and very good. But it also had a moment of comic relief that my brother and I still enjoy. Jellico was just coming onboard and was making a show of what a tightass he is.
Brother: What a jerk!
Me: He’s just being efficient-
Jellico: And get that lionfish out of my ready-room!
Me: -He’s an asshole!
Oh, derr, and I forgot to add my real moment (which I see was brought up by RobuSensei. It’s not so much Picard’s fight with Robert, but the way he finally admits the agony and suffering he went through. That, along with the end of Chain of Command, are the only two times I can think of where Jean-Luc really drops his professional exterior, and I think it makes them very effective. I was actually crying and smiling at the same time - crying because you could see the pain, and smiling in a “my cap is off to you, Mr. Stewart” kind of way.
Funniest moment: TNG, the “De-Evolution” episode. Everyone’s de-evolving, and Data and Picard have a deadly serious talk about what’s going to happen. Data tells Picard that he too will de-evolve into some sort of animal.
Picard asks: “And what kind of animal will that be?”
Data: “Perhaps a lemur or…pygmy marmoset”.
BWAHAHAHAHAHHA!
Oh, one other sad Picard moment - when he finds out his brother and his family are dead. “There will be no more Picards.”
Ah, yes - Garak. Who can forget? The entire episode where he arranges for the Romulan senator to be killed so they will forced to join the Federation against the Dominion - classic, classic, classic.
These are great, folks. Reminds me why I so love this universe to play in, every incarnation.
Esprix
RobuSensei - it was a future older Jake. Don’t worry too much.
Many good ones already mentioned – the flute melody at the end of The Inner Light, “There! Are! Four! Lights!”, Spock’s death, Picard breaking his “little ships” in the ready room in First Contact…
There are also a few good Q moments that I really like – he had some good lines:
Q: “Ahh, Worf… Eat any good books lately?”
Picard: “You are not God, Q! I refuse to believe the universe is so badly organized.”
Q: “Blasphemy! You’re lucky I don’t smite you or something…”
Picard: “Where’s the anomaly, Q!”
Q (dressed as old man): “What? Where’s your mommy? Why… I don’t know!”
As for DS9, one moment that stands out to me was the season 2 finale – because that’s when they intensified the whole Dominion plot (only hinted at before) – with some Jem-Hadar ships (which we hadn’t seen before) making a suicide run and destroying a starship (a Galaxy-class ship, I think). And the chick Vorta (who was on the station) saying “You have no idea what’s begun here” and transporting herself away suddenly.
