Your Favorite Vowel

For purposes of this poll, W and Y may be considered vowels.

Pick ONE.

Sometimes Y, baby! You can’t fence Y in!!!

I chose W, because most people don’t think of it as a vowel.

I chose W too. It seems like the runt of the litter and I like rooting for the underdog.
And it’s worth two U’s , there’s always that.

Y. Just because.

My second favorite is Sarah.

I like all vowels equally, other than “Y” and “W”. Those two suck.

O. Because it’s got character.

Well I clicked in here to say “Sometimes y” but instead I’m gonna say:

W? Is considered a vowel? What? When? Where? How did I miss this news?

It’s part of a vowel sound in two words right there: “how” and “news”. It can be a vowel all by itself in some words derived from Welsh, e.g. “cwm”.

W is a vowel?
Honestly I’d never heard of that. So I looked it up. I’m calling shenanigans on the whole thing.

It’s apparently a vowel in two cases. The first are words like “cwm” and “cwr” which aren’t English words at all. They’re Welsh, which uses a Latin alphabet. And if we’re going to start incorporating foreign languages into English rules then damn near anything can be a vowel when it’s transliterated.

The second possibility is in words like brow or low or row, etc. In that case, the “O” is still acting as a vowel in many of its acceptable pronunciations. It’s just accompanied by a “W” sound. But that W sound isn’t any different than the W from Where or Wait. Sure, there’s a unique phonic involved, but it’s the same as when you combine P and H together for “phone” or C and H together for “Change.” PH and CH aren’t letters. They aren’t vowels. They’re just sounds. Same with “row.”

So no, W isn’t a vowel in English.

Oh, and my favorite vowel is “A” because it’s the Fonz’s favorite.

W in “sow” (the female pig) is doing the same work as U in “sound”. So, if W is a consonant in the former case, U is a consonant in the latter case. However, no one (as far as I know) ever says that U is a consonant in English.

Sincere apologies for leaving her off the list. I like her, too.

How about ü or î?

How about the poor unsung schwa? While all those stressed vowels go around, acting so high and mighty, the schwa’s out there, day after day, keeping words pronounceable but never getting any credit.

You know what’s going on right? Do I have to spell it out? It’s anti-semitism. All those Greek and Roman letters won’t let schwa forget his Hebrew origins. Sorry “shva” the alphabet’s full - no room for you.

Is this a parody thread, or is it so obviously a parody thread that I’ve been whooshed?

A is the only real choice

Let’s take E… It’s always going EEEEEEE and running away. What a fraidy cat, sissy. Nope

What about I? It is always going IIIIIII, it’s so self absobed it’s always I, I and I. Nope

What about O? It’s has personality issues. You ask it something and it goes “Oh?” Like it doesn’t believe you or “Oh!” Like it’s all excited. Either way it’s a suck up vowel.

U? No way, suppose you ran a stop light, the cop would ask “Who did this,” and the vowel would finger U as the guilty party

Now that leaves Y, which is too nosey and always asking questions and W which is barely a vowel at all. Besides it takes THREE syllables to say. Nope too complicated.

This leaves A as the correct choice. And for final proof, what does the Fonz say “Aaaaaaa”

This seems like as good a time as any to mention “Eunoia” by Christian Bök.

Each of the five stanzas consists solely of words using only one vowel in their written form.

Of course, you’re only asking about the letters used to write the vowel sounds in English, you aren’t asking about the different vowels. I prefer ɔ, myself.

As a synesthete, I have very strong opinions on letters and numbers, and I say** i **is the best vowel. In fact, it’s one of my favorite letters altogether. I supposed e comes second.

Here’s what I think about the vowels, in order of preference:

I- white. Lovely, quiet, and demure.

E- sky blue/powder blue. Also quite and bookish, espcially lowercase e.

A- yellow.

U- strange off-white, a sort of ivory with hints of green or yellow.

Y- yellow.

O- dirty off-white. I don’t like O. Too… round.

W- sort of mahogany/maroonish brown. A letter I genuinely dislike, or at least am bored to tears by. W is a stuffy, solemn man, not fun at all.

I may or may not have these particular reactions in a given word, but if it’s the first letter of the word it’s usually like the above.

I chose E. My first name is Elizabeth. It’s also the prettiest vowel. It’s bright and sunshiney yellow.

My color/vowel/personality matchups are as follows:

A - crimson red; very strong, protective

E - bright sunshiney yellow; cheerful, reminds you of a spring day

I - dirty pale blue; boring, total slacker

O - charcoal grey; jovial, smokes a pipe

U - lavender; demure, sensual

W - brown/dark purple color; dull, lifeless, bleah

Y - white/shell grey; elegant, like an angel
I do agree with Malleus, Incus, Stapes! about W. W needs to get a life, v. boring. Nice to know there are others like me out there.

If ‘w’ is a vowel because of words like “bow” or “how”, then what the heck do we do with the letters in ‘though’ or ‘bough’?

A, E, I, O, U, Y. All others are wannabes.
