Snow White is still the champ. Call me old-fashioned.
Although I like Belle, too.

Excactly. I had a friend of mine (a doper, as a matter of fact, let’s see if she pops in…) and she explained why she HATED Belle, and basically this is why. She always just does as she is told by the men in her life, with the small exception of Gaston.
Jasmine, on the other hand, doesn’t give a shit about tradition of her “expected” place in society, is not immediatly enchanted by “the prince” (which is to say not when Aladdin is the prince…she fell for him when he was just Aladdin BECAUSE he also rejected cultural norms and just didn’t give a shit,) pals around with a huge-ass tiger, is HOT with a capital HOT (hence why I used caps lock…and the outfit don’t hurt none, either), is very attractive, quite beautiful, and is easy on the eyes. I guess what I’m trying to say is…I admire her commitment to community service.
She barely needed rescuing, and only because Jafar used his snake staff on the Sultan…I could easily envision her saying “fuck THAT!” and running away for good if Aladdin didn’t break it.
Belle, on the other hand, would have been all “Well…he’s old, and evil, but I gotta do what I gotta do, so let’s have at it.”
It’s funny, I’ve always felt I should like Belle more than I did, but wasn’t sure why I didn’t. I remember a friend saying to me when the movie came out “Oh, you’ll love it, the girl likes to read just like you!” I do like to read (I even grew up to become a librarian) and I liked the Belle character well enough – she seemed like a nice girl and all – but when Aladdin came out I immediately liked Jasmine a lot better. I don’t think I could have put my finger on why, but reading this thread I think it was because Belle was relatively passive.
I don’t think Belle was terrible or anything, and there have certainly been far worse movie heroines, but Jasmine has her beat when it comes to feistiness.
Plus, the tiger is just plain cool.
I voted for Belle but, had she qualified, I would have voted for the Evil Queen in Snow White. She has more sex appeal than all of the other princesses put together.
Many of the Disney villains are far more interesting, and better portrayed, than the Good Guys (and Good Gals). The Evil Queen is a mature woman at the height of her power and sexuality. She knows what she wants and she’s not going to let anything stand in her way, certainly not some chit of an airheaded girl who daydreams her life away.
Yeah, I always root for the Evil Queen. And for Frollo (Hunchback of Notre Dame) as well.
I’ll always go for the nerdy one, so I picked Belle, but since she’s not actually a princess, I also put in a vote for Ariel.
Have you read Neil Gaiman’s short story “Snow, Glass, Apples”? If not, I recommend it – it presents a very different take on the Snow White story and the behavior of the “evil queen”.
I vote for Ariel by virtue of her beauty, her lovely voice, and her amazing soundtrack.
Belle marries a Prince. That’s usually how most Princesses are formed.
I very well might have. I’ve got a couple of his anthologies. It SOUNDS familiar…but I quite frequently read re-tellings of old fairy/folk tales, so I might be conflating it with something else.
Can’t believe I wrote passed instead of past. Anyways, I found a link that I think is appropriate, if you can laugh a bit at the stuff you like.
