Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and mostly clear with a predicted high of 94, but becomin’ partly to mostly cloudy later in the mornin’ and into the afternoon. The big item on today’s agenda is to funeralize dear Glenda. Other Verger’s husband had a mild stroke on Wednesday (will be released from the horsepistol sometime today) so she is obviously not goin’ to be able to serve. Fortunately, someone has stepped in to serve so that’s all good. In addition, a former Priest (now retired, but still a Priest) will be the Officiant. He will need some assistance as he has mobility issues and uses a cane. This I can handle, as I have served with him a bunch of times and am aware of what he needs. Plus, he has no problem sayin’ what assistance he might need. Plus there’s the matter of makin’ many little chikin sallit sammiches and gettin’ ‘em there by ten a.m. and doin’ everything to set up for the service. However there will be brunch with OYKW at Eggs Up, so that’s good. I will also have to deal with candles and such for tomorrow after the service and after the brass tops on the candles have cooled down. Those things take about twenty to thirty minutes to cool down enough to touch. This has been learned by experience. So, TL;DR, I get to spend the day dealin’ with a funeral.
.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. I am up way earlier than I needed to be but body told me it couldn’t sleep anymore. OK, caffeine, food, purtification, appropriate attire, sammich makin’ and funeral stuff. Fun times!
Start with corn that’s at room temp and remove as much silk as you can. There are several recipes on line, but what I did was melt butter and spread it on the corn, then put it in the fryer basket at 400° for about 15 minutes, shaking the basket occasionally to move the ears around. Actually, half-ears, because I find them easier to manage. Other recipes use olive oil or corn oil, and some have you salt and pepper the ears before you put them in.
Just a caution - allow time to cool - they hold heat pretty well.
If he brought it in, he’d have to share it. In the woods, it’s all his!! Idiot dog. FCD has just gone out with Otis to follow him into the woods in search of Bambi. (ETA - he found it - one leg is gone. And Otis is still out there, so I guess he’s having venison for breakfast. I guess that’s how he survived when he was running loose before Animal Control got him.)
My poor sweetie had a rough night so I’m not sure what today will hold. He ordered some special gummies in the hope that they might help him sleep - not sure when they’ll be delivered. I mostly sleep OK, if not long and undisturbed, but Mel does help. What doesn’t help is a stoopit earworm (theme song from The Greatest American Hero) If you clicked on the spoiler, it’s your own fault!!!
Chance of rain today and tonight, but the next 3 nights, we’re suppose to have mid-60s for lows, so I see windows being opening. Today starts overcast with 68 Ferrets, headed to upper 80s. So we’ll see what we see.
Morning (still unsure if it’s a good one or not). Drove through and around thunderstorms after yesterday’s missive and got checked in early enough to catch the World Cup game. When it ended I decided to check out the park as they are open until 10pm
Whooo. Not to crowded so I rode 5 different roller coasters (Gatekeeper, Valraven, Blue Streak, Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster 2, if your curious) and even with the evening hours and reduced crowds still had to stand in lines for 15-30 minutes. Slept well, obviously, and while I am a little achy will head back over, will try to do the less popular rides today, then maybe look for other things to do Sunday in the area and buy a “fast lane” pass for Monday that lets me skip ahead some on the popular rides. At least that’s the plan right now.
Park doesn’t open until 10am so have some tile to rest and maybe explore before returning to the madhouse.
Have kept reading all but not absorbing much, so take care and have a good weekend.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 27c/81f with a predicted high of 29c/84f and mostly sunny. Weather app says “It’s warm and clear, and you should fucking be at least 3/4 naked. You know, just fucking because.”
Herald that is an ideal seat for some of them, I wish the uni agreed with us on that!
metalmouse good to hear you’re enjoying the drive and getting some scenery in as a change from boring big roads.
shoe I’m sorry that irk has been irking you and that you’ve had to deal with some bad stuff. That word is one that should not be used, and especially when the person it’s aimed at isn’t there to defend themselves. It does sound like a chat with SM is in order, she needs to know that it happened. Also, because it’s been a difficult day personally for you… {{{{{shoe}}}}}
Spice_Weasel what a lovely story about you and hubs
swampy sounds like you have a busy day ahead with the preparations and funeralising. I hope it all goes as well as it can.
I had a non-productive work day yesterday and a significant “out of brain” episode in the afternoon. The house has been very hot, we’re all lethargic, and I was not prepared to make anything hot for dinner so we had the last of the salad stuff with cold meat, cheeses and quiche. Aftewards, 'im indoors said it would be very nice to be outside with a cold drink. Fortunately I understand that kind of code so we strolled round to the local pub and avoided the football by taking our drinks to the furthest away part of the beer garden. Got home and had to wait for an hour for the aircon unit to cool the bedroom down, so we watched a film and then I went to bed.
I’ve been to the hairdressers this morning and am now freshly frou-frou’d. Mollie, you’re not the only one with “new” hair today! I’m back home again with a cuppa, and then we need to go out and do errands. We’re going away on Thursday so I need to make sure there’s enough cat food and litter for the fuzzbutts, and I need to get a card and gift for the catsitter as this will be the last time she comes here. She and her wife and baby are moving out of the area so while we wish her well, we will miss her very much. Now I have to find a new catsitter…
Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to be moral and have a conscience. I could have stolen $80 easily yesterday. They would have been the perfect crimes.
First, I’m DoorDashing for some extra cash these days. Mostly it’s been slow, clustered around lunch and dinner and mostly to either businesses or trailer parks. Yesterday I had a pizza order to a nice house behind one of the gates down here (The Villages). A nice old man answered the door and tried to hand me twenty dollars.
“Is this all or me?” I asked.
“Well, it’s for the pizza,” he says, “here’s your tip,” and he hands me another six bucks.
“Oh,” says I, “well, you’ve already paid for the pizza. It’s in the app.” I’m positive his daughter did the ordering and he just wanted to answer the door. I gave him his twenty dollars back. The daughter was nice. Every thing was cool, but I could have just said, “Thankee …” and traipsed out with a fresh double-saw-buck.
After that, on the same outing, I was cashing out a jar of coins at a Coinstar kiosk at a Walmart. $86.89. The first issue popped up when I handed the cashier my ticket and eleven cents. I think she was pretty new. I was nice about as I explained what I was doing and she was nice listening to me and we managed to complete the transaction at which pointed she held the ticket out to me and said, “Do you want this back?”
“I’m pretty sure you’re suppose to keep that,” I told her. She shrugged and wished me a pleasant afternoon.
I could have accepted the ticket, walked over the the register next to hers and cashed out for another sixty-eight dollars.
I’m too good for this world, I’m telling you. Especially considering how mind-numbingly broke I am right now.
Married when I was 19 and my wife was 18. First 3 apartments were furnished. We brought a water bed, a 13" B & W TV and a stereo to the marriage. 2 years later we bought a lining room suite at Levitz. Black naugahyde sofa & a upholstered chair and an ottoman. We felt pretty middle class. But Oh man! was that sofa heavy! must have had a frame made of elm
It’s 60F with some high clouds at the moment. The skies will remain cloudy to mostly cloudy today, with a daytime high of 76°F.
Shoe, I’m sorry your day was so rough because of work drama and the anniversary. Sending you hugs. I’m glad you got to discuss the work issue with S.M.
Metal Mouse, I’m glad you’re exploring the back roads. Interstate driving is rather boring.
Swampy, it sounds like you’ve got quite the day ahead of you. I hope all goes smoothly.
FCM, Polar dragged a dead squirrel through the pet door and dropped it on my bare feet. It was rather startling, if not icky. He was very proud of himself. Fortunately, he left the rather big and dead possums he hunted in the backyard. Unfortunately, I had to clean them up. I hope the gummies help FCD.
To be fair, my Jeep has a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine that delivers 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. She can go, and she has a nice, throaty growl when I goose her.
I have to use a check to pay my HOA dues every year. That is the only thing that requires me to use a check. Everything else is paid for electronically.
I definitely had another busy day yesterday. After posting here, I changed out the toilet seat in the guest bathroom, emptied the fridge of a couple of squishy cucumbers, bell peppers, and lots of expired condiments, and found other stuff to haul to the dump. I loaded up the trailer, woke up my husband, and we were on the way to the dump by 8:30. There was a short line, but we were out of there relatively quickly, returned the trailer and were back home by 9:30. I have a shelving unit that is leaning in the garage. I wanted to empty it and cart off the stupid shelf to the dump, too, but for some reason, my husband didn’t want to mess with it. That irritated me,
However, once we got home, and I had another cup of coffee for fortification, I decided to clean-up the garage (the two car part). I spent four hours out there, and every time my husband came out, I sent him away, because he is just a bull in a china chop. He just wants to get things done, and I am a lot more intentional. Once he saw what I had done, though, he was pretty dang happy. If he had bothered to back his Beemer out of his side of the garage, I would have done his side, too. As it is, I cleaned up and rearranged the area in front of his Beemer.
It’s a lot easier to get around in the garage now and to reach our bikes, the bike hitch rack, and other things.
My youngest sister and her family are visiting down near Hillsboro/Beaverton/Forest Grove, Oregon and I’m going to make a point of going down for a day. I asked my husband if he wanted to come along, and he doesn’t want to. Mainly because he’s all about getting the painting done. I told him that I will be going, it’ll be overnight, and that’s that. I haven’t seen her in three years, and it’s not like she gets up real often anyway because she lives in Texas.
I’ll probably make my reservations today for Tuesday/Wednesday, and spend today washing walls so I can paint tomorrow and Monday. He wants to take a day of rest, but I don’t. Once I return, I’ll be working on cleaning the carpets and washing down the rest of the walls.
Alrighty, I suppose I should get going. Please take care of yourselves.
A recent crossword clue was, “the only day still named after a Roman God.” That’s Saturday, for Saturn. The Norse gods outscore the Romans, with days named for Wodin, Thor, and Freia. I could be wrong; I often am.
Mrs. Nott vacuumed the floors yesterday, and I’ll try to get to mopping today. Back when I was a factory janitor. As part of the maintenance section, I attended the weekly Maintenance meeting and reported back in a news-page called The Janitor Jet, with the motto “Hoppin’ and boppin’ and moppin’.” Did I mention I’m a silly man?
VanGo, here’s my recipe for corn on the cob in the microwave. Remove the husks. Wrap in wax paper, twisted at the ends. Two cobs, 4 minutes nuking. If you prefer it more or less cooked than that, adjust the time.
Called maintenance yesterday emergency call as theyre off duty.
He came and snaked the pipe again. Still dripping.
Lets hope they figure it out Monday.
Went to urgent care to check on my uti, which I got Wednesday. All gone, still taking the macrobid til Tuesday.
Free hotdogs and praise in the Square. Church lunch, then off to beg.
On dr recommendation, I got no sugar added cranberry juice.
Well yesterday evening was almost an eventful one. That dang grey and white pit bull was out again and running down the street. Thankfully it was not chased by children this time. But that dog must have caused some serious trouble in the past because a neighbor came out of his house with a gun. He took off in his pickup after it but presumably didn’t find it, as he was soon back home. He sat on his porch for probably 30 minutes waiting with his gun for that dog.
I sure hope the owner can figure out how to contain it, otherwise between my neighbor and the busy street it always runs towards I don’t image it’ll live long.
Today should be fairly quiet. My mom and her friend want to go out for brunch again, but they never pick a place and insist I do it. I don’t mind going with them but I’m really getting frustrated at having to be the decision maker.
Happy Saturday! At 9:51am it’s slightly overcast and 78°F, but the expected high is only 87: I’m still a little traumatized from last weekend’s triple-digit temps, so I’ll take it!
Except for seeing my dad on brother on Father’s Day, I’ve spent the last 5-6 weeks either at work or at home alone…today, though, I actually have plans! This afternoon I’m meeting an artist friend at her storage space: I’ve had a 48" x 24" painting of hers for the last eight years, and it was the perfect size in my old place but it’s kind of small for the wall I have it on here. She’s going to let me look at what else she has from the same period/style, and see if I can find two complementary – but not complimentary – pieces to hang on either side. I’m hoping for 24" squares. She sent me photos of some options, but I really need to see them in person.
Afterwards, I might go to The Container Store. I could use some countertop and under-sink organization stuff, and I love The Container Store. But I’ll see how long the art excursion takes, and whether I feel up to more people-ing.
Whenever I get back home, there will be Lego: yesterday I started building the Diagon Alley Wizarding Shops. And I might have put together a new display shelf unit, with two more standing by in their boxes.
I have plans tomorrow, too (who am I?!): I’m meeting an old friend for lunch at our favorite Thai place, out near where she lives (~27 miles from me). She has early afternoon plans, so we’ll meet at 11am. We’re “ticket buddies”: a few times a year we go to theater or live music performances together, but we haven’t been to anything in a while and don’t have any imminent plans. We almost went to a “Magic of Motown” show today, but the only seats left weren’t worth it for imitation Motown. Whenever there’s a long stretch between shows, we make an effort to get together and catch up. She’s the only friend I have who isn’t on any social media sites.
Yesterday I meant to mention that I’ve never felt invisible or had (real) trouble seeing while driving a sporty/small car. Sometimes if I’m in heavy traffic behind a truck or SUV I’ll change lanes to be behind a smaller vehicle just so I can see more of what’s ahead, but 99% of the time there’s no downside to being in a two-door. I’d rather be low and fast.
I’d call that a motel.
HA!
(FCM, I’d definitely need a kit/set: I could never design it myself!)
I think that’s the 3.5-oz bag setting on this microwave (I’ve noticed that the wattage is a bit higher than my old microwave’s). For whatever reason, my old microwave never showed how much time the “popcorn” button was set for: it didn’t display any countdown until 30 seconds before it was done, at which time it would also beep.
I’ve figured out most of the lights/switches here. There’s still one switch, in the garage, that’s a mystery: it seems to do nothing, and there’s no obvious outlet or broken light fixture it might control. It doesn’t bother me, though. If I ever need to have an electrician here for something else, I’ll try to remember to ask if they can figure it out.
The only other mystery involves the upstairs hall light. It has three switches: one at the bottom of the stairs, one at the top of the stairs, and one near the master bedroom. Apparently, using the one near the master bedroom somehow “breaks” the other two: I’ve used it to turn the light off, only to then not be able to turn the light back on with either of the other switches until I flip it. It’s kind of annoying, because discovering that made me realize that I probably didn’t have to change those lightbulbs the other week after all (I thought they were burned out, but it was probably just the switch thing). Also, if they all worked normally I’d most often turn the light off near the bedroom and turn it on at the bottom of the stairs. But right now I can’t be bothered to figure out the combo/how to use all three: for the time being I’m simply not touching the switch near the bedroom (I use a guard to help) and I only use the switches at the top/bottom of the stairs.
Ok, that’s way worse than my hall light situtation!
That sounds awesome! I haven’t ridden a coaster in I don’t remember how long. If I’m ever near one again, though, I would.
Good on ya.
When I was a broke college student I worked at a store in the mall that would have been soooooo easy to steal from. I often worked entire shifts without eating because I couldn’t afford to bring or buy anything; I lived on campus and had a meal plan, and could only afford to eat at the school’s cafeteria. We sold kitchen gadgets and tchotchkes (anyone remember Lechters?), and I would get so jealous of the customers who blithely handed over $20 bills to pay for $2 items! I spent way too much time planning The Perfect Crime…I just wanted to go buy myself a bagel sandwich at the food court. And I could have pulled it off, with impunity, but I was always too honest to actually do it. Stupid morals.
Oh wow, I haven’t heard the name of that chain in quite a while!
My 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six has 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. And also does the throaty growl thing. I’m good.
I want to change the plastic toilet seat in the master bathroom: a new wooden one was just delivered on Thursday. Same model I installed in my old place, so I know what to expect. I might get around to it this weekend. There are three other toilets in this house, but I don’t use any of them nearly as often and I’ll hardly ever have company: those plastic seats can remain, at least for now. Heh.
81F at 1025. It will be in the 90s for the next seven days, sad to say. I’m not sure the AC can keep up with it, but we’ll see. Got my Amazon order of eggs and yogurts, so no need to venture out.
Good morning. We’re up and at 'em. Chloé and I have been trying to rouse Squeaky for his road trip. Mrs Magill has decided to bribe him with Bojangles. Between that and his extremely “clean” ears, he’s moving.
You are correct, and I have no one to blame but myself. Aside: am I the only one who remembers they used “Rocket Man” in the pilot?
metalmouse have fun with the roller-coasters.
shoe - I kept you in my thoughts yesterday.
{{{ shoe }}}
Huh - I didn’t hit “post”
Well, they’re on their way there, and I’m off to get a haircut and my eyebrows trimmed. They’re like two caterpillars sitting on my forehead.
My recipe for microwave sweet corn and I know best cuz I was born and raised in Iowa:
Cut off the tip of the ear, through the husks and silk (not into the kernels). If there is a lot of stalk sticking out at the other end, break off or cut it off too. Put in microwave for 2-3 minutes each ear (2 min for small, early season ears~3 min for big later season ears). 4 ears, nuke for 8-12 minutes.
When done, after sitting for a couple of minutes to finish cooking, with hot pads or a kitchen towel, pull off the husks and silk (they will come off very easily).
TL:DR? Throw in microwave, husks and all, nuke for 2 & 1/2 minutes each.
It will work even better if you put the Vaseline on right after your shower and you’ve gently patted it dry-that way the Vaseline holds the moisture in your skin that is there from your bath or shower.
Well, the threatened rain hasn’t really shown up, it’s just been misty really. Today’s mission was: go to nearby town and get a list of stuff. I wound up going to another nearby town as well (which has an excellent bookshop, one item was a book I couldn’t find at town 1) and calling in a few places on the way.
Overall I had a successful quest, but I did not manage to find acceptable sandals or a small gift for 2 year old niece (I’m gonna send a little box of small gifts for all 3 of 'em, the book was for the biggest one). I’ll have to go out tomorrow I think to find something. Problem is they already have so many things; I’m thinking maybe a dress-up item, she seems to be into that, but the pickings appear rather thin.
Fortunately they are not expensive if you shop around. My 9 year old grand daughter has spent hundreds of hours in hers over the years-dancing, being a princess, acting out fairy tales.
