So this would be my first post (and naturally, the first thread i’ve started). I was wondering just what to do for my first post. i’ve been a lurker for a few years, and i’ve always had a few questions in mind, or a few comments i might leave, but ive never had the chance to do so without a membership.
And now ive subscribed. Where do i go first? take it easy in mpsims, or get serious right away in great debates? this is a pivitol decision which may define me for the rest of my life as a SDMB poster!
So my poll question is… if you could do it over, what would YOU do with your first post?
Generally speaking, I would be nicer. Try to fit in more. My first post, as best I can recall, was pretty much a gauntlet toss. My acidity level, these days, is greatly diminished — even from just a few months ago.
My first post nearly 5 years ago was over how stupid the movie Dante’s Peak was. If I posted today, it’d probably be just a quick sentence about something I agreed with, say in MPSIMS, then I’d run away to hide somewhere, trembling.
First post, eh? Hmm… I can’t remember what my first post here was. Maybe I can find it.
:: fires up search thingy ::
The earlist post I can find from me seems to be this one, in which I ask whether the Oz books are in the public domain. But it’s from December 1999, and I joined in June 1999.
Incidentally, have you ever followed the ‘archive’ link at the bottom of the page?
My first post was in response to Cecil’s column on same-sex marriage, pretty much doing my best to smack him down. My post garnered a response from Cecil himself, which lent me a certain mystique which lasted all of about 3 days. I still think I got the best of the exchange.
I believe I waded in and posted to a thread about statutory rape. It would have been in Great Debates if there had been a Great Debates back then. (All we had was General Questions and Comments on Cecil’s Column)
Anyone in a structured position of power over another has no business having sex with them because sex is for between equals. Minors are legally disempowered in relation to adults. Some of those laws are damn stupid but the rape law is not the one to fix first. When they can vote, drink beer, sign contracts, and legally stop their parents from incarcerating them in a juvenile psych ward or a detention center for having consensual sex, then
you, the adult, have a better case for why you should not be charged with statutory rape. But if you aren’t serious about children’s lib in general, don’t start here!
Weeee look at all the replies, how exciting! Now that I see my own post I realize I could have at least done some spell checking and capitalization. I think I’ll get over the shame though.
Now I’m off to reply to every possible topic, test out all the features and get yelled at for making all the rookie mistakes!
