I reckon that the OP’s hypothesis is essentially a version of “people like to talk about themselves”. Give people any excuse, such as an ostensible poll of height vs. shoe size or whatever, and they cannot resist the opportunity to tell everybody about their own height and their own shoe size, and you get a three page thread.
