I think because of the recent spate of “fat people” and “fat hate speech” threads I noticed something the other day as I was standing in line at WalMart.

Tattoo’s have different level of…and I’m not sure of the adjective to use here…attractiveness, coolness, or bad-assness on normal people’s bodies than on fat people’s bodies. For some reason they look stupid on fat people, but less so on a person of more normal girth and proportion. And if the fat person’s gender is female, they look even more stupid.
What about you…is your impression of someone’s tattoo’s influenced by their weight?
I have been waiting to get a tattoo for 9 years now because I want to be built when I get it. I don’t think that it will look good if I’m flabby. As of right now I’m getting near the point where I will be in good enough shape to do it and I’m planning on making it my Christmas present to myself.
I was almost drunk enough in the Army one time to have a tape measure tattooed around my waist. It was a rock hard 32 inches at the time. Now at a luxurious 38 inches it would make me giggle as I jiggle to see I still measure a 32.
Yes. A friend of my daughters mother has an ankle tattoo and every time I see it I think “Wow, you have fat ankles.” It is an entirely involuntary response but it happens every time. She is a very nice person who I am friends with, but I can’t help my reaction.
I can’t even tell you right now what the tattoo is, because I don’t notice it at all, just the girth of her ankles.
I think it really depends on the person and the tattoo.
I’ve seen tattoos on large people look nice, and tattoos on small people look nasty and vice versa.
I will say that I prefer not to see many tattoos generally, because generally they’re in places that should be covered by clothing (unless you’re at the beach). This is probably more true for larger people because I tend to think larger people tend to look better in well fitting clothing that is somewhat supportive.
Shirts that tie on, as an example, look bad on everybody, but maybe worse on a bigger person, although they do allow a variety of tattoos to be viewed in my experience.
So here’s an ancillary question that may require a thread in GQ.
If a fat persion get’s a tattoo, and then they lose a lot of weight, how does that effect the appearance of the tattoo?
I’ve seen people’s tattoo’s that they go while they were thin, then they go fat, and the tattoo look’s stretched and out of proportion. Is the inverse true?
Reminds me of a joke that I heard long ago. Why do young women get a small rose tattoo on their breast? So they can have a long-stem rose when they are old (or something along those lines).
I have seen some pretty gnarly-looking 'toos on older folks they got when they were younger/slimmer. In hindsight, I’d rather not have seen those. One notable one was the typical ‘happy face’ which appeared to be now frowning since the person had obviously gained quite a bit of girth since being inked. My co-worker and I got a lot of laughs from that one!
I’m fat and I have a tattoo on the inside of my lower leg, above my ankle. It’s about 5" long. I think it really makes my lower leg look stunning, as it’s placed just right. I happen to be blessed with decent-looking, muscular legs - no “cankles.”
That being said, I’ve always wanted more tats but I’ve never been able to think of a good, discreet place to get one where I could see it that wouldn’t fluctuate with my weight.
My cousin’s a BIG guy and he’s got some nice tats on his arms. I don’t think they look weird on him at all.
To me tattoos are something that mean something to the people who get them. To be totally honest, I rarely pay attention to what someone’s tattoos actually are so to me someone’s body has really nothing to do with my impression of the tattoos.
I don’t have or want any tattoos, but they only bother me* if someone has them on their face. One of my neighbors has a ton of them but I couldn’t tell you what any of them are, I just don’t pay attention.
by bother me I just mean “I find them distasteful” and that’s only because if it is on their face it’s distracting and (for me) makes it hard to read their expressions.
I went to school with a big young woman. She was studying marine biology. A few years after I graduated, I saw her and noticed the enormous coral landscape tattoo that covered her calf.
I couldn’t help but think, “Wow. Now her leg looks even bigger.”
Tattoos look stupid on everyone.
Often my assumption is that fat people have tattoos because they want to look more trendy or sexy. I do not consider it to be sexy at all.
Personally, I don’t like tattoos in general. To me, it’s like a birthmark or deformity and it would be rude to draw attention to it or stare at it, and in regards to this thread, I would be doubly uncomfortable if a fat person had a tattoo. I really wouldn’t know where to look to avoid staring at them.
