Huh… after doing all the prep for the NYE party, showering, and sitting on the couch, I realized I hadn’t eaten a thing all day, so I made a sandwich… turkey, peppered salami, and provolone on TJ’s garlic cheddar sourdough.
First of 2009 was the same thing (minus the turkey, which I had finished the night before).
First meal of 2009: For breakfast, my girlfriend made a potato-vegetable stirfry, and I made avocado souffles; we also made oven-pressed bacon, and had mango juice on the side. Sophisticated and delicious.
We went over to visit some friends for dinner on New Year’s Eve. They made a lovely slow-simmered pork stew, served with roasted potatoes and grilled asparagus, mushrooms and tomatoes, all washed down with a Wolf Blass Cabernet Sauvignon. And there was chocolate mousse cake with ice cream for dessert. Mmmmm.
First meal of 2009 was a big mug of coffee and a toasted English muffin slathered with homemade cranberry-pear-lemon jam. My stomach was rather cranky at all the wine consumed the night before and the fact that I hadn’t crawled into bed until 2:30am.
Last of '08 – we had some friends over and I grilled some pork chops and made a nice big salad. For dessert I made a blackberry crisp served with vanilla ice cream. Also, there was a store-bought taco dip (I was going to make mine, but ran out of time/too lazy) and a really nice walnut-studded brie with crackers. And of course, plenty of booze.
First of '09 – the redoubtable Mrs. Cliffy made chocolate chip and banana pancakes. The banana flavor was subtle, but the addition of the fruit to the batter made them the smoothest pancakes I’d ever eaten. Then for lunch we went to perhaps the best restaurant in D.C., the Blue Duck Tavern, to celebrate our anniversary.
