Your least favorite "Modern Family" character

Mitch and Cam annoy me the most as characters, although the actors do a great job. Mitch and Cam are generally awful people, and a horrible role model for Lily. I actually like Lily and I think all her outbursts/sarcasm/etc that are angering a lot of people in this thread are actually spot on what would happen with any precocious child raised by two pretty terrible people. Most episodes show Mitch and Cam turning things around, forgiving eachother, etc, but they never change their manipulative, backstabbing, and petty ways.

I disagree with Panache that it has anything to do with them being gay though. Same results would happen with Lily and her dialogue would make as much sense if it were just two straight people raising and having adopted her (except the dialogue that has to do with gay issues specifically of course).

Lily is probably my favorite character in the show because she perfectly reflects how terrible Mitch and Cam really are.

I love pretty much everyone else on the show, for certain reasons.

Among the regulars I guess it’s Manny. No big deal but he’s not even an exaggerated version of a real person, just a totally artificial character. A lot of recurring characters annoy me, Manny’s dad, Jay’s ex, Pepper, Dylan, they just don’t add anything. I don’t get the dislike for Lily, lots of kids are brats, a girl with two fathers will be as bratty as they get.

This probably doesn’t count, but somebody pointed out that Ed O’Neill’s been reading the same newspaper for 20 years.

First of all, I enjoy ‘Modern Family’ and I feel like the characters are written the way they are to show that those kind of people do exists. I do know a few Clairs and Mitchells in my life, lol. But I don’t just have a character of the show that I dislike… I guess what I mean to say is that each character has a certain…‘habit’ of doing things that cringes/annoy me.

Let’s start with the Dunphey family.

Phil - He is a hopeless romantic and very ambitious… but most of it are well, for the better word, dumb. Either way, he is why the show is enjoyable. His stupid endeavours are funny.

Claire - Oh. My. God. Do not get me started on her. Her character is purposely made to annoy us. She’s the typical stay at home mother (earlier seasons) who has nothing better to do than getting involved in other people’s issue, even if she doesn’t have to. And when she does, she makes it competitive and then gets bitter when things doesn’t go her way. Especially during that one episode about the crazy speeding driver who was actually a client of Phil’s (season 2). I couldn’t watch at episode without rolling my eyes at her. I prefer her character towards the later seasons, when she started working for Jay… she’s more mellow.

Luke - He’s like the exact copy of his dad, Phil. He’s cute when he was younger but as soon as she starts growing up and started liking girls, he became such a perv and thinking he’s the whole package. It’s really uncomfortable watching him trying way too hard to get girls but that’s what teenage boys do.

Hailey - Pardon my french but she was a horrible little slut when she was younger. Not to mention rude towards Claire especially when it comes to party and boys. I dislike her so much while she was growing up. If people think Luke is whiney, Hailey is the queen of whiney.

Alex - Very awkwardly smart girl. She’s alright I guess but she’s just trying so hard to be ‘funny’. Especially when she’s ‘insulting’ her family members… cringe worthy.

Next, let’s move on to Jay’s family.

Jay - Grumpy old man who got lucky marrying a very beautiful woman. Hard on his kids and always try to be the tough one when he’s also a big baby on the inside.

Gloria - I don’t really know… other than her being loud when she’s mad at something or someone. I guess she’s hot and that’s all. She’s hot.

Manny - Oh boy. His acting during the earlier seasons are cringe worthy. I guess maybe that’s why they cast him as Manny… he’s awkward in most scenes, like very awkward. And his desire to be older than his age… yea… no. Why can’t he just be a normal kid? Also, he’s somewhat a spoilt brat. The way he dresses… (dinner jackets) his expresso drinking and thinking he’s “macho”. But at least, he’s way better than Luke. (cringes)

Last but not least, Mitchell’s family.

Mitchell - Like every paranoid gay dude I’ve known. He’s uptight, just like Claire but he tends to wuss out when things get difficult. Whines a lot too but weirdly, he’s one of my fav characters. He’s what I call “in the middle kind of gay” meaning he’s not flamboyant neither is he the ‘gym gay’ (with hot bods).

Cam - My fav character ever! He’s is why I love this show. He may be overdoing things but that’s what I love about him.

Lily - Ok, she’s the best of all the characters in the show. She’s the cutest ever when she’s a baby and the actress they got to play her grown up, she’s gorgeous! I love it when she’s rolling her eyes over her two dads crazy antics, lol.

So, there you go. That sums up my opinion on Modern Family. Right now, I’m rewatching the earlier seasons and so mad at Claire right now… as per usual.

I know I’m like two years too late to respond to this, but since I apparently didn’t see it the first time around and someone has bumped it: if Jay had paid for it, would he ever stop mentioning it? What’s the longest he could go without bringing it up?

Oh, and as to the OP’s question: Manny. Yeah, I get what they were going for. Yeah, I’ll even grant that he had his moments, when he was young enough that the effect was jarring. But compared to everyone else, his schtick stalled out a while back.

Cam is the only character I DO like. I detest all of the rest of them (and they’re not funny IMHO) and have since stopped watching the show.

I don’t understand why the writers have made Lily such a snotty little girl. I don’t find sassy, disrespectful children amusing. She could be cute if they would write her that way. What’s funny about eye-rolling?

Anyone remember Cybill, and her daughter Zoe played by the gorgeous Alicia Witt? The Zoe character was *soooo *snotty, rude, and just plain mean to her pretty cool mom that it ceased to be entertaining. It just got to be tiresome. She was a caricature of the rebellious teen and took it too far. I repeat, what’s funny about eye-rolling?

He did help pay for it. He gave both kids loans to buy their houses that neither of them ever paid back. An episode centered around them offering to repay the loan, as a gesture, then panicking when he accepted their checks.

Ah, I’d forgotten that episode. Still, wasn’t that just help with the down payment?

My least favorite would have to be Manny. Don’t really dislike him, though. I just enjoy the others more.

I quit watching this show because every child is insufferable and every person on the show was a cliche stereotype or a stereotype “with a twist”.

By the time I stopped watching the only one I really liked was Jay’s first wife.

I hate everyone on that show (so much so that I don’t watch it. The wife does, however).

The person I hate most is Phil. I find him so damn annoying. What’s worse? My wife says he reminds me of him.

The thing about Phil: I can’t get around the fact that Ty Burrell is so much my “type” in so many ways. I find it impossible to separate this fact from the character of Phil. I especially loved the ep in which he almost wound up in bed with Matthew Broderick.

What part of California are they in that a (to me) $300,000 home is worth $3 million??

And, Manny. I hate that punk. If he has bullies, the bullies are correct.

One of the good parts of the greater Los Angeles area.

SPOILER ALERT FOR A SEVERAL YEARS OLD L&O EPISODE:

Watch the episode of Law & Order (TOS) based on the DC sniper, where he plays a man who kidnapped a boy because he wanted a son, and he is very controlling, and doesn’t let the kid have friends, or outside interests. When Burrell’s character gets in trouble at work, the kid starts sniping random people, so he can pick off Burrell’s boss, with no one the wiser about who the original target was.

Burrell is pretty scary in this episode.

He was a real shithead in the Dawn of the Dead remake, too.

The actual house used for exterior shots on the show went on sale in 2014, the asking price was $2.35m. Phil and Claire Dunphy's "Modern Family" House For Sale

To the OP, Cam, Joe, Claire, Manny and Luke, in that order.

They’re all horrible people in one way or another, but the one that annoys me most is Alex. Her only real function on the show since about the 5th or 6th season is to just walk by and roll her eyes at whatever the others are up to, exemplified by the smirk on her face in the last shot of the opening credits.

The average home price in LA is 575K and a realtor gets 3% of each sale. Since he has never gone a month without a sale the minimum he could be getting is $204K per year. Since he is selling in a nice part of LA and has sold more than one house per month multiple times he is likely making nearly a million per year.
