– Must be sung, in English (so the horrible Mudmen is out, as is the Great Gig in the Sky which no one would vote for as worst anyway. It also eliminates tracks with no vocals or only spoken samples, otherwise many of the instrumentals off More would count. I’m not sure if SSoSFAGTiaCAGwaP counts as sung or not, but no skin off my back if you vote for it as worst.)
My nomination? I don’t remember The Division Bell so I can’t nominate from that. I guess I would nominate Chapter 24, which works somewhat on the album Piper at the Gates of Dawn as it fits into the atmosphere, but falls flat on its own. When it comes up on my MP3 player I usually fast forward.
Granted, there’s probably some more obscure (no, not obscured) material out there that I might abhor more but as far as the frequently played, better known stuff, I tired of the wall really, really quickly.
Hard to choose, especially if you eliminate instrumentals (most of Obscured by Clouds is only so-so, but the worst parts are instrumentals). I’m not impressed by anything on Animals, but nothing stands out as being particularly bad. I could do without the narration on “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast,” but I don’t dislike the music.
If forced to pick, I’d go with “Breathe,” which seems to me to be an inferior version of “Time.”
Yeah. There’s a lot of crap on The Division Bell too. Not that I’m a huge fan of Roger either, as I said in the other thread my favourite period is from when there was no dominant personality (approximately 1969 to 1972).
Well, most of the really bad stuff does not have lyrics, so does not fit your criteria. I don’t think allowing that stuff would make the choice it “too easy”: there is a lot of it (and a lot of excellent lyric-free stuff too). I think my nomination, without that restriction, would be “A Spanish Piece” off More.
I bought The Final Cut as soon as it came out (as I had with all their albums since Dark Side), played it through once and never listened to it again, so anything from that except “Not Now John”, which is not very good but not horrible like the rest of the album. I can’t think of anything else that actually has proper lyrics and that I truly detest. I don’t really think very much of “Dogs”, but I don’t hate it (and I see a lot of people in the other thread are choosing at as their favorite - oh well!).
After looking it up on Wikipedia, I see that “The Narrow Way” has lyrics, even though it is mostly instrumental, so I guess that counts. Although it is far from the worst thing on the studio album of Ummagumma (indeed, probably the best after “Grantchester Meadows”), it is still pretty darn bad. (The live sides of Ummagumma, most of which are instrumental, I love, but the studio tracks just seemed to degenerate into total, and mostly pretentious, self indulgence.)
I am disappointed in The Narrow Way, even though like you said it is one of the best off of Ummagumma, not because of the writing or performance but because of the production. If it had been produced more like Echoes it would have been one of my favorite Floyd songs.
Out of the stuff you might hear on the radio, Run Like Hell or Young Lust are both contenders. I’m sure I could find worse, more obscure songs but I’m not likely to be listening to those albums anyway.
It would have to be something from Momentary Lapse Of Reason, if you even count that as a Floyd album. The whole thing suffers from far too little Richard Wright. So did The Wall and The Final Cut, but at least they had Waters at his best and a good deal of Gilmour firing on all cylinders too.
I like Seamus because not all of that is a real dog howling, but was created on an early synthesizer. Like the wolves at the start of Deep Purple’s Hush.
Money is an awkward interruption in a great album. And it sucks donkey dongs and would if done by anybody and heard anywhere.
