I thought Tuor slew Maeglin, throwing him off the walls of Gondolin when he attempted to abduct Idril and slay Earendil. Maeglin certainly never served Tuor.
My mistake. An earlier version of the story has him tortured and killed by Morgoth after a successful betrayal.

The series entitled The War of Light and Shadow by Janny Wurts. Verrain was an apprentice wizrd for several hundred years working diligently towards being a true mage. Being a grad student, I sympathized with that.
