And so much fun to laugh at!
When I saw Tansu’s comment, that’s exactly how I planned to reply. Then I saw you beat me to it, so I guess I’ll just toss in another vote for the Post.

I’m not confusing the two issues. They’re related, in that England fans have a bad reputation because a number of them are arseholes. Who would be pleased if Batistuta broke his foot.
I will cheerfully concede I should not have used the phrase “the average English fan”. But I still maintain that an English person who tries to take some kind of moral high ground over one Argentinan paper treating Beckham’s assaulter as a national hero is throwing stones in a glass house. If it happened to Batistuta the Mail, the Sun etc. would barely be able to disguise their glee.
BTW, I have lived in England (during Euro '96, even) and spent several years working in an English expat pub in America which aired live English football, so I’m basing these statements on extensive personal experience with England fans, or “fans”, if you prefer. Just in case you were wondering.
Estilicon
If I were to take your thread title and transpose it so that it was a direct insult to every Argentinian then I would not be at all surprised if I were to get a robust response.
It was not even a generalisation about the English where it would have been possible to refute in a civilised manner, it was simply an attack on all English, this at a time when many Britons are mourning the loss of one of the Royal family(though I admit that I am not one of them)
So in return you got a few insults back, so if you find these difficult to deal with, you should qualify your attacks by restricting them to those with whom you take issue.
Everyone knows that Argentina are one of the favourites to win the World cup, England will be grateful if they even get last the group stages, our talent is scarce and precious and the loss of one player hurts us far more than it would Argentina, who seem to have an overabundance of good players just waiting to prove themselves.
The problem is, The Red Tops think they are doing the fans a favour by winding them up for the matches. Watch as se what would happen if the Germans meet england (which they won’t, because they wont get past Ireland!) the tabloids will be full of “Engerland!! vs The Krauts”. I will post actual headlines from the sun and the mirror before the Argentina game to show just what kind of jingoistic crap these people will pull.
The Irish fans are just glad to have a legitimate excuse to dodge work and come in with hangovers. We want to see our country do well, but we dont expect them to win, just to make a good showing of themselves. The further they go, the longer we will spend getting pissed. The country is going to come to a standstill!!
BTW
Offaly!! we have dopers in Offaly the dopers are going nationwide!!
Unfortunately I think that we will be home before our postcards. I am finding it hard to be that enthusiastic about the World Cup as I think we will do badly and the idea of watching football at 9am just isn’t right.
Unfortunately I think its a straight fight between the penguin coveters and the cheese eating surrender monkeys (both of whom we’re likely to have to play.)
Oh well roll on 2006.
Since the matches are played in the morning (European time), you actually get to show up drunk at work!
Ya think I can get myself a Paddy passport within a month, so I can do the same?
I don’t think so.
There is no English International defender or midfield player who would want to be hailed as a ‘national hero’ for injuring an opposing player of any nationality.
This is because English footballers are just as sporting as their Irish counterparts.
Any headlines suggesting ‘heroism’ would have a greater and more deleterious effect on the England player concerned. We would not wish to go into a World Cup competition with Stephen ‘The Man Who Broke Batistuta’s Foot’ Gerrard and therefore such headlines, if any, would be short-lived.
I am wondering if during your experiences with England fans or ‘fans’ whether you came across any people that you actually liked. Perhaps you could enlighten me on this point to balance your argument, so to speak.
I have met plenty of decent England fans, Nostradamus. I even lived with a couple. Their existence does not nullify the existence of the arsehole England “fans”.
And as for the press being concerned about the deleterious effects their reporting might have on an England player’s performance - well, they certainly didn’t care how their hatchet job against Eriksson on his appointment might affect his…
Nostradamus, once and for all. Duscher isn’t hailed here as national hero. The incident only got to the news because of the english media attitude. Our coach, Marcelo Bielsa expressed himself for all of us. We want you to get the best team you can form, that way it would be even more funny to kick you out of the world cup (or at least, in this case, to lessen your chances). And besides Nostradamus if anything happen to Batistuta wen still have Crespo.
It does not. It does however give some balance to your views which was previously conspicuous by its absence.
The arguments for and against Eriksson’s appointment did not depend upon his willingness, or lack of it, to injure opposing players.
Estilicon, I notice that Duscher has now apologised to Beckham. I am glad that he has done so, for whatever reason. I would not like him to be seen as another Maradona, feted in Argentina for scoring a goal with his hand, and revelling in the glory which was bestowed upon him for so doing.
Furthermore, I did not say that Duscher was a ‘national hero’. Ole printed that statement. I do not write for Ole.
ole is just a newspaper. I wouldn’t blame all english for what murdoch says
And Besides Nostradamus, Ole (I never read it) is far from being the Times of Argentina. That role belongs to “La Nacion” WWW.Lanacion.com.ar you should it read it. Ole is an sport newspaper.
You say two posts above this one that Ole is just a newspaper and that you wouldn’t blame all english for what murdoch says.
Yet you start a thread entitled Your Majesty you and all your subjects go and fuck yourselves and follow up with: I started this thread because of the childishish attitude of the English media.
Hot damn! I can’t wait for the World Cup!!
USA!! USA!! USA!!
Again, not the point. You imply that the media would not proclaim the foot-breaker a national hero because doing so would affect his performance and thereby hurt England’s chances in the tournament. One would think that a media onslaught against the national team’s manager would affect his performance as well, though, and the media had no qualms about doing that.
Just to let you all know, the US football team are currently preparing to have their asses handed to them in a hat this Wednesday, by the all singing, all dancing Irish team in a warm up match for the World Cup.
I know it will distress all the ex-pats to see such an example made of their national team, so I think it best if someone starts a support thread for them now.
I DO think that the bloke who injured Judas Campbell is a national hero and we should put a statue of him in Trafalgar Square.
Is gangrene too much to hope?
Ah, our resident football thug. I would expect no less from the “ask the English football hooligan” guy[sup]1 [/sup].
You sir, are an embarrassment to our nation and the beautiful game.
As for the OP, I for one am hoping for a full strength England to take on a full strength Argentina come June. With any luck we might win this time.
As for '86, who knows what would have happened if the ‘hand of God’ had been disallowed but what I know for sure is that Maradona’s second goal is one of the greatest of all time. Despite being English I feel privileged to have witnessed it.
As for '98, I still don’t know why Campbell’s header was disallowed.
[sup]1 [/sup] No link I’m afraid as it was one of the threads lost in our Winter of Lost Content.
